My husband went outside this morning and our 55 Galaxy was still locked but all electric windows were open. Has this happened to anyone else and does anyone have any suggestions what could be the cause?

This has happened to me recently and is exactly why I am on this site. The rear offside window has stopped working, when I open the rear door and close it again the hazards flash twice shortly followed by all of the windows lowering themselves (except the faulty one). I thought it may be the window motor but when I wiggle the wiring loom that feeds from the door pillar to the rear door all problems go away. I also have no dashboard lights as a result of the same problem, wiggling the loom again fixes the problem. Electrical circuits in a modern car are extrememly sensitive and the slightest short can cause the strangest of gremlins in the system. Having looked on the forum I have concluded that the wiring loom is at fault and will attempt to look/fix this weekend, I'll let you know if this resolves the issue. Have a browse on the forum as there is a full guide on how to access and repair the wiring loom, it is a commom problem it would appear.

Very often people say that you should look for water on the floor, in the carpets, especially under the passenger seat. On some models the window and central locking control box is under there.

thought that was only on the mk1's???

i would defo be looking at wiring problems within the gaitors in the doors 1st before delving any deeper.

Correct, the convenience (or pain in the ass if its got wet) module was fitted below the passenger seat but only on early Mk1's. By 1998 it had been moved up behind the drivers side dash and nothing was fitted in that recess until 2000 when the park assist module was put down there for the launch of the Mk2.

I would suggest wiring in one of the front doors will almost certainly be causing your problem but I'll be interested to see what jut-sus finds at the weekend though as I've never seen a rear door's wiring causing the window lowering effect - in theory at least, its only the front door wiring that can cause that but as we all know - theories a wonderful thing!

you haven't "sat" on your key by any chance have you? If you hold down the unlock button on your fob, it will activate the global window function... Happens to me all the time...

Well, here it is!!!!! Once I opened the wiring loom on the door with the affected window this is what I found, 6 completely broken wires and another 4 with the insulation frayed. This is caused by the continual movement of the wires when you open and close the doors, mine is an 04 plate. A bit of soldering and crimping will fix the problem (search the forum, there is a guide)and all of the electrical gremlins are gone now that I have isolated all of the broken connections. This is 99% what is causing your window problem and you can expect to see more electrical gremlins as the broken wires continue to short, start with the wiring loom that runs from the door pillar into the door with the affected window. Apart from being a pain in the rear, electrical shorts can lead to fire and that is not good. Get this looked at if you cannot do it yourself.
