john1doherty Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 Hi all, i have just bought a 01 galaxy 1.9tdi zetec last night theres only 65k on the clock (genuine for i phoned the 1 owner before buying) when driving home last night i noticed that the battery warning light kept flashing off and on just for a second each time, checked and the belt for the altenator, looks fine and the fuse box at the battery looks good too , but the terminals look look very shiny and new and the cables not so new also the lead from the battery to the fuse box looks new so i wonder has it been replaced due to the burning other posts have discussed ? is this known to cause other problems ? also on the ac control panel the ac works fine when the fan speed is at 1 or 2 but when i turn it to 3 or higher the ac cuts out , when i turn it back to 2 on it goes again any ideas ???????? Nelly1979J Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 Best way to diagnose the battery problem is to get a fluke and measure across the battery whilst the engine is running and there is load, lights, heaters on etc and see what kind of voltage you get, could be wiring or may be that the alternator is on its way out. My galaxy had the burning fusebox issue but have not had any battery related issues since I changed the box and wiring (Saying that never had any battery issues before the burnt fusebox)As for the Air Con I have no idea. john1doherty Posted October 10, 2010 Author Report Posted October 10, 2010 thanks i will get the multi meter on it tomorrow morning. cheers Quote
chromedome Posted October 10, 2010 Report Posted October 10, 2010 The A/C may be caused by the resister pack (hedgehog)which is located on the left side of the heater behind the glove box, I think green or red in colour. Normally this affects the lower fan speeds but may be worth a look. There has been a post on here recently about a thermal fuse blowing on the hedgehog and how to replace it. Quote
john1doherty Posted October 11, 2010 Author Report Posted October 11, 2010 thanks chromedome i will get a look at that and the battery and see what i come up with Quote
Bigjeeze Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 I had a similar issue some while ago on my Mk1 it turned out to need a new brush pack on the alternator - the brushes had worn down so that they were not contacting correctly.. Quote
john1doherty Posted October 11, 2010 Author Report Posted October 11, 2010 thankg bigjeezecan you tell me where you got the brushes from ? cant locate a dealer here in northern ireland thanks Quote
john1doherty Posted October 11, 2010 Author Report Posted October 11, 2010 well, checked the battery when the wife came home and voltage was 12v engine off and 14v engine running- all electrical equiptment off (window demisters lights etc) and stayed at 14 v with all electrics on ,looks to me like the altenator is working so i guess i am looking at a new battery ????? removed the ac register pack/ hedgehog and checked the thermal link by puttint the meter accross it and it is ok, alough from reading other posts the pack its self can go faulty, when i removed it the fan only worked on speed s 1 and 4 from what i gather this is normal as the resistors are only used in positions 2 and 3 , so i guess i need a new one of these ? anyone know hwere to get one apart from a stealer :D ?? thanks john :( Quote
Bigjeeze Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 thankg bigjeezecan you tell me where you got the brushes from ? cant locate a dealer here in northern ireland thanks Check out a Bosch dealer - you should have one somewhere in NI - if not a postal job should do it. You will need to identify your alternator. Quote
