hi everyone...

i have just purchased a 1999 galaxy mk 1 2.8 ghia x...lovely car..however i bought it with a known problem and i`m trying a home fix {hopefully)..with your help

the car drives fine but the temp creeps up after a while..to just on the red..you can bring it down slightly by putting the heater on max heat

water is returning to the expansion tank via the little hose on top so i guess the water pump is ok ?

and its not pressuring up which i believe the head gaskets are ok ?

no water/oil mixing

i have noticed the radiator bottom hose is cold but the top hose is hot

was thinking thermostat sticking or radiator blocked

any help will me much appreciated

hopefully Could be an airblock or its been topped up with water for so long there's very little in way of coolent you might get lucky.

try leaving the coolent cap off overnight.

Putting the heater on max, blows cold air over radiator behind dash.Try putting just rear heater on see if you have any heat.

Impaler on waterpump failure its a commen problem or secoundry pump failure there's a 2nd one to drive coolent to rear heater test it by putting in a pipe then you just need a bucket of water and immerse the bottom of pump in it .

Either way test both.

sorry i`m a bit of a novice car mechanic...where are the pumps situated and is it an easy job to remove or test

the heater in the car does blow out nice hot air which i believe makes the heater matrix ok

was told the if water was returning to the expansion tank that the pump was ok

was gonna flush the water system...can anyone tell me the quickest and easiest way hopefully

thanks for the info cyborg

1 Are the two thermoststically controlled radiator fans coming on when the engine is hot? I had a 2.8V6 were they both failed. It was a tricky DIY to replace them. They must both run when the temp moves toward the red.

2. Keep the syetem topped up.

thanks for the advice...

the fans seem ok...they cut in and work at different speeds i read on here cos i have climate control

still think it may be blocked radiator or thermostat..

ran it today on idle for about 45 mins..the bottom hose feels warm adj to the thermostat housing at the top of the engine but as it goes to the bottom of the radiator the hose is cold

think i`m gonna change the thermostat and flush the system

has anyone on here done that...if so

i would apreciate any step by step instructions
