Mussey1 Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 I have noticed that since changing the head unit from my 2006r to a panasonic the FM reception does not seem as good!! It's fine when the car is a rest, but when on the move you can hear the signal fading from one side of the car almost as if someone is turning down the sound. When I press the 'mono' button it appears to be okay again. I fitted an in line AM amplifier as advised so AM is okay. Is there any way of boosting the FM signal?? Thanks. Mussey1. Quote
Guest Murdock Posted May 2, 2004 Report Posted May 2, 2004 Coat hanger always used to work for me? Seriously though check the earth to the head unit and run another one to it if needed, the earth grouding makes the whole car part of the ariel. Quote

johnb80 Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 I had a similar situation on a Scorpio when the previous owner had not connected the feed to the ariel amplifier to the switched output on the head unit. All of the systems that I know of that have the ariel built into the heated rear window or side windows have an amp, double check the wiring on the back of the unit. Regards - JB Quote
iainkirk Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 Check the aerial lead connection to the tilting window - it's a 9v battery connector and is prone to disconnecting itself, given that it moves every time you open the rear windows. Quote
Guest emjay Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 I've got a similar problem - but with AM, Just can't get a decent signal but FM is OK, any suggestions? Quote
Guest nimrod Posted May 4, 2004 Report Posted May 4, 2004 Emjay have you fitted an aftermarket head unit? and if so have you fitted the powered aerial adapter? after fitting a non OE head unit I could get a decent FM signal and never really noticed the lack of an AM signal till someone on here pointed out the powered amp in the aerial lead and how an after market head unit doesnt power it, since fitting an adaptor I can get a decent AM signal  not that I listen to anything on the channels I can now get  Quote
Guest kev140766 Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 I fitted an after market unit to my galaxy and AM ( gotta listen to the footie) doesn't work at all. I read about shortening some earth lead, but what is this about a powered aerial lead? Quote
Guest nimrod Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 the standard head unit provides power for the aerial amp through the aerial lead, a non OE head unit doesnt :( hence the loss of receptionthe powered aerial adapter fits in between the aerial lead and the aerial with a fly lead off it that you connect to a power supply off one of the leads in the ISO plug they can be picked up from most good car audio shops or off the net easily enough Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 Kev - read some of Nimrod's (and others) earlier posts in this section of the forum. The aerial in the Gal is fixed to the side window glass and has a separate amplifier that is powered from the radio (head unit). Without the correct bit, you will suffer from almost no MW and LW reception. FM reception will be reduced too. The bit you need only costs around a tenner and just plugs in, the work of a few seconds once the head unit is removed. Quote
corskey Posted June 9, 2004 Report Posted June 9, 2004 I've had an afternarket DVD player fitted (by the previous owner) with an FM modulator and like these poor peeps above I get no AM or MW. There is a factory fitted sat-nav and looked to find out how the unit is removed, but it isn't too clear - any pointers please. Can the powered aerial adapter be fitted to the sat-nav head unit. BTW - any web links to the powered aerial adapter. Quote
