Mirez Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 Well I got around to looking at replacements for the half shaft assembly and stub joint piece last weekend, there is a lot of info on here regarding noises, metal sounds and loss of drive so I won't talk that much about the issue as if you've got to the loss of drive this might not be a quick enough fix anyway! However enough to say that if you have any of these symptoms: Clunk on take-upClunk when releasing the accelerator quickly in 4th or 5thClunk when changing from 1st to reverseSloppy feeling in the drivelineDifficulty changing gear'Chipping' of gears, especially 2nd and 3rdRed dust Then it would be very prudent to get the joint checked out! There is a lot of info on here regarding this, so get reading however I've tried to put as much info as I can into this post for reference. I got quotes from VW, Seat and Ford, with Ford being surprisingly the cheapest of the three: Parts FINIS: 1140358 - Shaft Assembly1313097 - Shaft 358 would appear to be a revised number as it now includes the support bearing and retaining cap: The prices are however, still quite scary coming in at Quote
Bigjeeze Posted August 29, 2010 Report Posted August 29, 2010 :rolleyes:Thanks Mirez for an illuminating post. I have, as you may be aware ,replaced my joints some 64k ago and whilst it is relatively easy the costs are high. I have read about the Polish site and their modifications but it's great to find someone who has actually fitted them . Hopefully over time they will prove their worth. Mine is making some funny noises again so I may be in the market for a set. But , thanks agains for your piece and the excellent pics. BJ Quote
Mirez Posted August 29, 2010 Author Report Posted August 29, 2010 (edited) No worries, I'll report back in time - especially if prompted as I'll probably forget lol - but my initial verdict is that its well made and should be good. Oddly enough one of my deciding factors in going non OEM was that my gals only done 68K miles from new - for a major component like that to have worn so quickly can only really be bad design and I was somewhat bothered that new OEM bits would do the same. That said the new ford parts do show as being a revised asssembly but I can't see any reason why this polish assembly would fail at all as the splines much longer. a good fit, well greased and sealed. I would suspect the bearing will fail long before the splines wear out again. Edited August 29, 2010 by Mirez Quote

I too replaced the shafts and bushing into the transaxle a year or two back, using the Ford bits (got trade). Anyone with a bad clunk on takeup ought to jack up the front and check out the play. I kept an eye on mine for a year or so, and caught it just in time. The male spline was worn right down and must have been close to the point of shearing completely. I swapped mine at about 120,000 miles and now up to 170,000. If you ever split the assembly for any reason, its worth cleaning off and re-packing as the joint is not sealed! (especially if you run without an undertray). Quote
Phil Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 Guys, Does this Affect only the MK2 or are there other makes this affects? Phil Quote
gregers Posted February 15, 2011 Report Posted February 15, 2011 bloody hell mirez,i missed this 1st time round, how are they doing? Quote
Mirez Posted February 15, 2011 Author Report Posted February 15, 2011 Lol how? It's probably the biggest post I've done :D Yes nothing out of the ordinary to report its still attached, not knocking and feeling good. When (if) summer rolls around then I might strip it back and do a preliminary inspection but its only done 5K since so I would be danm miffed if there is any wear going on! Phil, it effects all Mk2's be it a Galaxy, Sharan or Alhambra - the only one I believe is different is the 4-Motion Sharan. I've yet to see a Mk1 with this issue but I believe they do have a similar joint so I wouldn't be suprised... Quote

uk_promonsta Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 Hi, just about to order these parts from poland as mine is very sloppy and not far off shearing i think, on just over one hundred thousand miles. Was wondering if anyone could help me with what greese i should be using when reasembling? Also what the torque of the allen bolt on the gearbox stub, and the torque bolts on the half shaft would be? Cheers. Quote
Mirez Posted February 18, 2011 Author Report Posted February 18, 2011 Hi, standard CV joint grease is all thats needed. I dont recall ever finding a torque figure for the allen bolt but the half shaft bolts are torqued to 80Nm Quote
Willie Krashitt Posted February 18, 2011 Report Posted February 18, 2011 Hi All, The long 'Allen' bolt in the centre of the output shaft should be torqued to 25Nm. Intermediate bearing to block bolts 45Nm, and as Mirez says, driveshaft flange bolts 80Nm.Remember DO NOT BEND THE CV JOINTS MORE THAN 20 Quote
uk_promonsta Posted February 18, 2011 Report Posted February 18, 2011 Ok thanks very much. Dont suppose you know the size of the of the allen bolt? thanks in advance. Quote
uk_promonsta Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Bugger that was lucky! the new parts got ordered sunday night, arrived thursday and today whilst the other half was out doing the shopping they stripped and had no drive. Pulling out of a junction on to a busy road, luckily she made it across the road and got recovered by father inlaw. So car home and i know what will be doing tomorrow. So thanks for this post, its saved me a lot more money. Quote
ggobin Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 uk_promonsta - let us know how you get on - thinking of doing this job myself. ThanksGary Quote
uk_promonsta Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 Hi ggobin, Did the job this morning and i have to say it really was a nice straight forward job to do. I didnt rush (drinking lots of coffee inbetween) and it took me about 2 and half hours, but could have done it in 2 really. Just follow mirrez post and you wont go far wrong. Couple blocks of wood under the tyres meant i was able to do the job without some one having to step on the brakes for me, obviousley i didnt have the car jacked up that high of the ground. So all in all fairly easy to do if you have the right tools. Good luck. Quote
Peter2904 Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 Mirez, having just replaced the two outer shafts on my gal, which was really easy, I inspected the said part above and found like yours there was some play. With the two new outer shafts in place the drive is 98% better. I am only getting this wobble now when I initially pull away, and I get a shake when I initially apply the brakes. I am pretty sure it's going to be where the play from this intermediate shaft that is being taken up each time aftter breaking when I pull away that is causing this wobble/ vibration. I have emailed the company above but not got a reply yet, I am hoping that it will fit mine, it's a 2003 1.9 tdi auto, don't suppose you know if it would.......I'm off to France in a week and half so am pretty desperate to get this done..... Mirez Posted July 22, 2011 Author Report Posted July 22, 2011 (edited) No idea sorry! Looking at this auction for the auto stub: http://www.ebay.co.u...=item2a0377f210 I would say it looks extreamly similar (pic copied & attached for those reading this at a later date) but I think only motomax will be able to advise you properly on if it fits. Peter2904 Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 Don't know if anyone can help, I have been given a ford part number of 1133088 for the int shaft I need. A friend has a vw shaft for a sharan with a part number of 09b409356. It says it's for a 01-08 auto sharan, mine is a 03 gal 1.9 tdi auto. Does anyone know if it will fit."........ Quote
suzuki91 Posted October 1, 2011 Report Posted October 1, 2011 just had my drivers side fail on a mountain road in france, recovery and repair 800 euros. OUCH.... Quote
Cosworth Posted November 4, 2011 Report Posted November 4, 2011 (edited) My brother has had a problem which cost him an arm and a leg in recovery costs and a remortgage on the parts from the main dealer. We found this guy on Ebay selling the intermediate shaft and gearbox input piece after we'd shelled out for the parts with the main dealer but it might be of some use to someone else out there & might save them a few quid in the process! bofus Posted July 2, 2012 Report Posted July 2, 2012 Thanks to all for the advice and recommendation to use motomax in PolandThe shaft was delivered in 3 working days, fitted exactly as expected and has made the car so much nicer to drive. No more clonking, no more clunky gear changes and a much smoother drive take up.....and no worries when i tow the caravan :-) Quote
