The first time I heard the name Zetec was years ago on TV when the advets mentioned something like "the new Ford Zetec".

As we're looking to buy a newer galaxy ( T or V reg) there are loads of adverts for the 110bhp Zetec TDI. Yet when I saw one it looked the same as our old 90bhp VW TDI engine {unless I was being strung a line, could have been out of an Anglia for all I know}.

Can anyone explain to me please what Zetec is or means ?

Is it still a VW engine or Fords own ?

What about the newer models with the 115 130 bhp are they still VW ?

If anyone can shead any light on this please it would be most appreciated, its keeping the wife awake at night worrying about it, and I can't take much more.

Thanks.

All diesel engines in the Galaxy are VW engines.

The Zetec is used by Ford to denote the trim level, i.e. basic LX, "sporty" Zetec or "luxury" Ghia. The Zetec model is in the middle of the range so you'll get a bit more equipment than an LX (alloy wheels, parking sensors, etc. on the Mk2) but less than a Ghia (cruise control, all elec. windows, etc.)

Thanks for that info I always thought it was to do with the engines.

I'm pleased to say that the wife is now sleeping soundly at night again, comfortable in her new found knowledge and no doubt dreaming of parking sensors and alloy wheels.

Thanks again.

Sorry about the late reply to your post - only just seen it!

I was under the impression that the word Zetec first appeared to describe the new generation engines for the early Mondeo's. This extract from Wikipedia goes a little further:-

"Ford Motor Company used the Zetec name on a variety of Inline-4 cylinder automobile engines. It was coined to replace "Zeta" on a range of 1.6 L to 2.0 L multi-valve engines introduced in 1991. The company used the name widely in European advertising and later introduced it to the North American market with the Contour.

The Zetec name was so recognized that Ford decided to apply it to other high-tech four-cylinder engines. It is used across many engine types in Europe today even though the original Zeta design ended production in 2004. Ford also confusingly used the "Zetec" name for a trim level designation in certain markets".

Cheers!

Hence the "Zetec" in relation to the Galaxy denotes the trim level only.

The only Ford engines used in the Galaxy were the 2.0 and 2.3 DOHC petrol engines, neither of which were Zetec engines.
