The radiator cooling fans (2) are running at all times, any ideas why this is happening, or what to check.

Temperature gauge displays normal. Climate control works ok. temp settings 20deg C. Water level normal.

cheers

Don't forget that the rad fans are quite high tech - they run at several different speeds and not just on or off....but they should always be running if the aircon is switched on. Not sure if the fans can operate separately or if they always run together.

As soon as I start the motor, the radiator fans (2) come on, and stay on, no matter how long the journey ie 5 miles or my normal 15 miles to work.

Climate control is fitted so there is no switching the air con on, unless you adjust the temp to low, the temp settings for front and back are set to 21 deg C.

If you have climate control, then the fans should run all the time unless you switch it to "ECON". Sounds like they are working correctly.

When my air con system in my previous galaxy was replaced I also noticed that the fans remained on all the time while the aircon was on. It was very disturbing because it was very loud and caused vibration through the car. Prior to new system, the fans did not come on even though the aircon worked but was not getting as cold as it should.

I took it baxk to the dealer and two of the technicians had an argument as to whether the fans should run all the time - the concensus was that it was not so and the car was rebooked. Unfortunately, I swapped my galaxy before this was finally sorted!!

Not wanting to tempt fate, My current V6 climate works well, it is always set on 21 or 22 degrees with the aircon on (I have never used the ECON mode), and I find that the fans only come on or spin fast enough to be noticed when it is working really hard but definately not all the time.

if the air con is on then the fans will run! air is needed to be drawn across the condensor in order to remove the heat from the refridgerent, as Ivor said the fan controller is fairly inteligent and will only run the fans at the speeds it needs to in order to do this!

AFAIK the fan(s) only have two speeds, slow and fast. Slow is turned on when compressor demand is on (though compressor may not actually be on) or the water temp is greater than 95 deg C. Fast is selected when water temperature is greater than 102 deg C

The slow fan with A/C is as Nimrod says to improve efficiency as the A/C condensor would be heated by the water radiator sitting immediately behind it.

If your fans are audible on slow speed then they (or one) is out of balance or damaged.

My (single large) fan is inaudible on slow setting.

TIS shows two fan variants as two independant electric fans - some VW cars have got twin fans with a belt between the two (how naff!)

My twin fans are staying on even when I turn engine off. I have to take fuse out off front of car to stop them draining battery. Any ideas I could try before seeing garage?

I've got the same problem - fans stayed on and drained the battery. What would cause this - I know there's a fan controller but don't know where it sits.

Greentangerine - not sure what car you've got but I've just fixed this on my 2003 Alhambra TDI fitted with aircon - the battery went flat several times due to a relay sticking sometimes. The relay in question (radiator fan control relay) is located on a bracket under/behind the fuse carrier which sits over the battery. A new relay is
