pkrocks Posted July 4, 2010 Report Posted July 4, 2010 Hi, First post so be kind! Went to start my car last night after it had been parked for three hours and it wont start. Ignition lights all come on fine but nothing. This morning i tested the battery and its fine. Its the v6 automatic so wondered how the neutral start system works on these. Ecu can be heard running through its self test when you turn on the ignition but getting no click at the starter solenoid. Not got in to test the started yet going to try that soon.Any one any ideas on this. I fix tanks for a living and they all have gearbox inhibitor switches to stop you starting it in drive. Do normal cars have the same systems? Any Help would be great. Thanks Quote

Steve S. Posted July 4, 2010 Report Posted July 4, 2010 Hi, Have you checked to see if your brake lights come on when you press the pedal? If not, is likely to be the switch under the the brake pedal. (If you have cruise/control don't confuse this switch, also under brake pedal but has rubber tube connected) Steve. Quote
pkrocks Posted July 4, 2010 Author Report Posted July 4, 2010 Thanks for that. I tried the brakes straight away and the lights were coming on fine. You can here the click as you press the brakes and it releases the gear lever to allow you to move out of park.Right now I'm thinking its the starter solenoid as there is no change to the battery voltage across the fluke when i try to start the car. Does this sound right? If it was a manual I'd just bump start it to see but obviously cant as its an automatic. Any one else had this no start problem before??Thanks Quote
mk2vr6 Posted July 4, 2010 Report Posted July 4, 2010 there is a starter inhibitor switch on the gear stick, try wriggling it while you turn the key? or you could bypass it and see it that helps? its an easy job to replace the switch if need be? Quote
frogeye Posted July 4, 2010 Report Posted July 4, 2010 What is the led on the drivers door doing? (ie is this an immobilizer issue?)Try turning your key all the way to start without pausing for the self test position (if you get what I mean!) This sometimes works on my V6, but this problem usually only occurs when the engine is still hot.Frogeye Quote
pkrocks Posted July 5, 2010 Author Report Posted July 5, 2010 Thanks, Where abouts is the inhibitor switch. Is it on the top of the box? (as in accessed from inside the car?) Will have a look at that one this morning. I tried the turn the key quickly idea frogeye but it makes no difference. I have a red LED to the right of the steering wheel but cant see one on the door card. Quote
mk2vr6 Posted July 5, 2010 Report Posted July 5, 2010 it's in the car on top of the box so to speak, its operated by the selector lever undo the screw holding on the T shifter, lift it clear and then pop out the selector display and there it is :D IIRC there is an adjuster bolt/nut set up that you can adjust if need be? but you could just short out the switch to check its operation Quote
pkrocks Posted July 6, 2010 Author Report Posted July 6, 2010 Cheers. I have got onto the inhibit switch i think. Is it on the passenger side of the gear selector? It has 4 wires coming out of the connector. How do i go about shorting it out? Thanks Quote
