Hi. After much fiddling and twiddling, I've decided to ditch the factory fitted sat nav unit for something (read ANYTHING) that will play CDs. Basically I've had a quick peek on ebay and they all seem to be different shapes and sizes. Is there something I should look out for especially, or something to avoid? Will anything the same size fit - or leave irritating but tiny gaps round the edges in the trim?

Any help or advice much appreciated. Ultimately I want CD in the front, while the kids stick earphones in with the DVDs in the back. Plan B involves routing the DVD player to the speakers, which will not allow me to listen to CDs while they watch their films, and will mean I have to listen to the dialogue in some pretty random kids films without any idea what's going on...

Cheers

Why not just attach a CD changer? Or get the VW 6-disc in dash changer and mount it in one of the glovebox's if you really need to change more then 6 discs on a journey!

The ford nav unit is Double-DIN, the 5000/6000 as fitted to everything else is DIN.5 (1.5 DIN). Both are standard radio sizes so you could get an adaptor to fit a single unit if you wanted.

I've got the 8 dvd changer in the boot, but it's just not compatible with the head unit, I don't know what would be... is there something obvious I'm missing? Can I buy any old cd changer and plug it in the back of the head unit, and stick it in the glove box and have musical joy everywhere I go?

YES! A VW changer and lead will plug right into the back. Want me to find you one on ebay?

I have a standard 2005 Ghia head unit with CD changer in the rear compartment and would quite like to have a Double din SAT Nav DVD but do you know which would fit and still control the changer? I presume its a VW set up?

Many of the Ebay double dins have a great set of features for around

The VW one:

RNS-MFD1 - is the only factory version. The only difference in the galaxy version is that its branded "Ford", illuminates green and has the ford splash screen other then that its still made by Blaupunkt for VW so you'll need a cable adaptor to take ford to ISO and it won't control the Ford changer, only the VW version. The RNS also requires a different center console to accept a double din radio.

You could consider the ford units that are fitted to the focus/mondeo as they are 1.5 din (same as the 5000/6000/7000 that'll be in yours currently) so will just pop into the existing hole. The basic version is "Ford Travelpilot" and the more advanced version is the "9000 VNR" - both are good units but the VNR's let down by very out of date mapping (latest available is 2003!) where the travelpilots still having maps made for it. Both will control the galaxy changer as they were designed for Ford vehicles only.

Just checked and mine is the 5000 stereo but not sure which changer I have 6 disc. Hadn't realised it was I.5 din so that complicates things.

Standard ford 6 disc changer - they are all the same from about 99 on with a square plug on. Basic mapping the travelpilot might be the way to go

Found a pic of it as well:

Quite a nice looking unit but only monochrome and no "map" just directions - up to date mapping though.

As for the 1.5 Din thing, the dash surround for the double din unit isn't that expensive - IIRC
