johnb80 Posted April 25, 2004 Report Posted April 25, 2004 Just finished fitting a TowBar with a removeable towing attachment to my 2003 115 TDi Auto. I got the bar and the electrics kit from Towsure in Sheffield. The bar was simplicity itself to fit and took less than an hour, another 90 minutes being taken by the electrics. It hasn't caused any problems with the reversing sensors with or without the ball in situ and I thouroughly recommend the Towsure bar, it's well engineered and very simple. Regards - JB Quote
italiastar Posted April 26, 2004 Report Posted April 26, 2004 JB, Thank you very much for the advice. With my previous car, a Mitsubishi SpaceWagon I was advised very strongly against fitting it myself - naturally, people with a vested interest gave me all the excuses under the sun - despite it looking very easy to me. Any advice from your experiences would be much appreciated. Thanks. Quote
johnb80 Posted April 27, 2004 Author Report Posted April 27, 2004 No problem, anything in particular I can help you with ?? Regards - JB Quote
Topbloke Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 i will try and remember to check in my cambelt book it could depend on what hp what year and even a chassis break involved, i would say contact the dealers but they tend to be very hit and miss and i would not want to be told 60k it let go at 55k then take it to dealer for warranty then find the bloke had left that told you 60k, is there not any thing definite in the service book they are usually up to date when the vehicle was produced Quote
Guest nimrod Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 cam belt - tow bar? I think someones posted their reply in the wrong topic  Quote

Jim Posted April 29, 2004 Report Posted April 29, 2004 johnb80, Did you fit the little heat shield to protect the break wiring and abs cable (from heat caused by the exhaust) when doing the towbar? This is mentioned on the Brink fitting instructions and I just wondered if it was 100% necessary. Jim. Quote
johnb80 Posted April 30, 2004 Author Report Posted April 30, 2004 Hi,I put the cables into some flexible conduit mainly for mechanical protection and routed them the same way the reversing sensors go. The existing cables had no additional heat protection so I wouldn't bother personally. Regards - John Quote
Jim Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 What a nightmare - just fitted a Brink ball and flange and it took me hours, but what took me the longest (nearly 2 hours!!!) was figuring out how to get the little platics bits of body work below the rear lights off - without breaking them that is. These must come off in order to remove the rear bumper. Personally I think whoever designed this should be shot. The towbar itself wasn't too bad and and all holes pretty much lined up exactly. I have still to do the electrics, but that will be a job for another day, as I want to try to do this without splicing into the cables, so it will require me rigging something up. johnb80, where exactly are these cables my instructions warn me about? The only wires I could see on my car are for the parking sensors and they are above the existing exhaust heat shield. Can see no other cables anywhere near where the towbar slots in???? Quote
johnb80 Posted May 8, 2004 Author Report Posted May 8, 2004 Dunno what cables your instructions are warning you about, my instructions didn't carry any warnings at all !!!!. If you go the route of the reversing sensor cables you're going to need to remove the metal strip in the boot opening to get under the carpet. To do this you will break the 6 plastic clips and hence need new ones, I got mine from fordpartsuk.com. Regards - JB Quote
Jim Posted May 8, 2004 Report Posted May 8, 2004 Totally confused me, but here's the Brink manual for fitting. I assume, like me, you had the original crash bar left over. There was no way the bumper would go back on for me with the original crash bar still attached to the bumper. Quote
johnb80 Posted May 9, 2004 Author Report Posted May 9, 2004 Unfortunately, nothing opens when I click the link, if you want to send it to me john@lincit.com is my address. Regards - JB Quote
johnb80 Posted May 10, 2004 Author Report Posted May 10, 2004 Hi,Got your email and I've no idea what theyre talking about, I certainly dont see how fitting a towbar will make it any worse! Having said that, my galaxy has a small tin foil type heatshield above the tailpipes and the connected silencer. Does yours not have this as standard ? If it is that heatshield I'll photograph mine so you know what it looks like. Regards - JB Quote
galantlad Posted May 21, 2004 Report Posted May 21, 2004 I bought a Towsure Removeable tow bar and electrics kit for around Quote
