Having cured the Hiccups on my 2.3 petrol Galaxy by replacing the 2 coils I was left with a distinct loss of acceleration and a definite feeling of a 'muffled' exhaust - Turned out to be a completely clapped out cat!! (thanks to previous contributer replies) Now... The pipe coming from the EGR valve seems to have exploded and is pushing exhaust fumes into the engine bay!!! There are 2 pipes - it's the larger of the two... I replaced the pipe - it blew off, I clamped it on with a jubilee clip - that too exploded!! The lack of power is still there at mid to top range any ideas what te problem/cure/COST might be? Is this a red herring for the lack of power symptom? Can I service/replace the EGR? Any suggestions......

Are you referring to the silicon rubber pipes that come from the stainless steel tube that runs from the EGR Valve to the inlet manifold coming off (either side of the "venturi",or "narrow bit of the stainless pipe")? If they are, then it would suggest that there is a lot of pressure in the EGR system. This could be due to a blocked cat/exhaust or the EGR valve having failed/stuck open. The EGR valve should be fully closed by 2750-3000rpm. If it is still open, then the pressure in the exhaust will go through the EGR valve and blow the hoses off.

You mentioned that the car had a new cat recently - has a piece of the old cat gone down the exhaust and stuck in the front muffler?

Hi George

Good call...

The car is going back in to the garage tomorrow to investigate that possibility - hopefully take off the exhaust and shake out the bits - alternatively... replace the exhaust?? The n we see if the EGR unit is malfunctioning....

the saga may yet continue
