hi guys looking at a galaxy diesel as petrol 2.3 is becoming costly to run, mainly looking at 115 and the odd 130 but seem to be quite rare to pick up, my question is are the 90 ps engines really underpowered i dont want to go from a 2.3 then jump into something thats going to be really slow, if so i will stay clear of the 90 ps models.

cheers steve

In a word... yes, but mainly because of what you are coming from. The 2.3 is 143Bhp so dropping to just 90 will be noticeable - you wont overly feel it at low speeds on acceleration as the 90 produces more torque then the 2.3 but as you reach higher and onto motorway speeds you'll really miss that extra bhp, especially if you are laden.

115's shoudn't be hard to find though on a Mk2 as they were nearly always the specified option?

*Edit*

I should clarify that I've never driven the 90ps version so it would be best to wait for the opinions of people who have driven both, however I went from a 2.3 to a 115 and found it fractionally slower as above so loosing a further 25 horses would have bothered me. Likewise 115 to 130 was a noticeable increase.

thats cool im not that fussed really i need to have the economy over speed really but good to have a bit of poke under your foot sometimes, one thing i have noticed is the mpg dont change much throughout the range even going up to the 150 ps engine doesnt change much, and yes most of the cars im looking at are 115 ps engines only one 130 ps on autotrader at the moment but a 115 would probably do me hopefully should get one in the next couple of weeks.

You will find all the diesels sluggish when changing from the 2.3 petrol the Tdi's just don't accelerate the same way.

There is a significant difference in performance between the 90ps and the 115ps.

The difference in moving up from the 115 to the 130 is negligible in comparison.

Don't know about the 150 as I have never driven one...sounds a bit gimmicky to me though.

The 115 is definitley the one to go for as they don't have the "boy racer" attraction of the 130 and the 150 and so they will be available at a better price.

You could always go for an Auto ( at least you know it will be at least a 115 ).

Obviosly fuel economy and "performance" don't go well together,if you drive it like an old man you will get better economy and poorer performance.....where as if you thrash it ...!

Don't buy a green one :o
