I have a 2001 1.9 TD Zetec (115ps) Galaxy

It has a metallic whirring, whooshing noise when accelerating. It happens when accelerating at any speed, in any gear. the noise is gradually worse as I accelerate harder. The noise stops when I ease off the accelerator.

The noise nevers happen when I am at standstill, when idling or reving the engine. It does not happen when driving at a constant speed.

There is never any smoke from it, it doesnt seem to lack power due to the noise (although I have just bought it so I don't know how it was before).

Any ideas about possible causes?

Many thanks!!

Sounds similar to what I had, does it also do it when slowing down? Is it coming from any particular side?

I bought a wheel bearing as the car has also made a noise when cornering from the n/s/f, which is the same corner the metallic whooshing noise is coming from, I'm hoping that's the only problem... still waiting for the call to say it's done...

As always before spending any cash on what internet forums say, get it diagnosed by a mechanic you trust.

No it doesn't happen when slowing down. Only when accelerating.

For example I am accelerating down the road I can hear the noise, if I stop accelerating then the noise immediately goes away.

Likewise if I am accelerating the noise it there, then depress the clutch the noise goes.

I was thinking it was clutch or turbo related??

It does not sound like the noise is coming from a particular side. Because it only happens when moving it is tricky to locate the noise, other than it being in the general area of the engine.

Sounds like a split turbo pipe. I had the same thing, sounded like a 747 when accelerating, although no real loss of power which I found strange.
