I can remember going to europe in my mk5 cortina and i painted my headlamps with some sort of amber paint which was to stop the glare, i bought it from a car shop....is this still legal, infact can you still buy it

That was when headlamps were made of glass and the paint could be relatively easily removed. Today's headlamps are polycarbonate so painting them could turn the plastic cloudy and you'd probably scratch them trying to remove it.

The yellow paint was a requirement a long while ago but isn't now.

 

Just use the Eurolites - they have reasonable diagrams on how to fit.
