SteviebROI Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 Hi folks I see many posts on MAF's but none with quite these symptoms. I have a 1998 Galaxy Ghia 1.9tDi that runs perfectly well all the time with the one exception... If revs are put up to 4500, whether in gear or not, the engine simply cuts out. It restarts normally afterward. Power not otherwise affected. It is not often that 4500 rpm is needed on the road so it is an infrequent event but the car test (in Ireland) requires a high rev and when the engine cuts the test goes no further. (failed MOT). Mechanic looked at several options but left with changing ECU now!!! Any similar problems out there? Quote
RADIOTWO Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 Hi Stevie Not too sure on this one, but there could be a fault, but why would you be revving it to 4500 rpm for a MOT ? I assume the tests are the same as here in England and there was a problem some time ago where they wereblowing up the engines revving them too high, so the MOT people was told to rev the engine but not too high. Why don't you take it to another MOT station and see what happens ? Radiotwo Quote

Unfortunately, the high revs test is standard here so no point in going elsewhere. Not sure why they have to do this. Some people are certainly concerned over engines being revved too high. Cheers Hi Again I see what you are saying, but I think I would contact the people who run the MOT side of things, and explain that revving a engine like that can dosome serious damage, and there is no need to go that high in revs (in fact when driving normally you will not get any where near that RPM) As I said we had the same problem over here and they had to back down as engines were popping for fun,and costing a lot of money to replace them. the suggestion of another MOT station was another tester might have been a little gentler than the one you are using ! any way good luck Radiotwo Quote
Jayton Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 Isn't the MOT to rev till 3000rpm three times to check for excessive black smoke? I've not heard of a car being rev'd to 4500rpm for an MOT as that's pretty much red lining the TDI's. Quote
Mirez Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 The most common cause would be a blocked fuel filter but I assume thats been renewed if its been to a garage already? Quote
mk2vr6 Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 With the engine at normal operating temperature, raise the engine speed slowly to 2,500 rpm or half the engine manufacturer Quote
