Steve T Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 (edited) Hi Guys n gals. Ive been on the phone to Ford but they have no clue. I have an annoying rattle from the front end. Sounds more Near side tbh. Changed Drop links assuming it was that but upon changing the off side this morning i noticed the manifold heat shield is missing its bottom bolt. By the way this moves and sounds by hand I reckon it might be the culprit as the drop links havent got rid of it. Im trying to find out how the shield mounts to the exhaust at the bottom. is there any rubber involved? what size bolt do i need etc etc?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,Steve. Willie Krashitt Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 Hmmm... E Cat only describes this fitting as a stud and also says that this stud is used on 2.0L engines only. Are you sure that there is a corresponding threaded hole /sheared off bolt behind the heatshield? ECat doesn't give the size of this stud, but from the torque requirement, I am guessing it is 6mm, but who knows. 2.3's had a fabricated steel manifold if I recall correctly, so there might have been a welded on bracket that supported the heatshield that has broken off? Never did any work on these engines so am a bit hazy as to what they fitted to what.Have you tried 'bending' it away from the exhaust to make sure it can't touch anything and seeing if the noise goes? Sorry I can't help you further, George. Quote
Steve T Posted May 13, 2010 Author Report Posted May 13, 2010 Thanks for the input. I dont think it could be bent enough to prevent it rattling. there is definately a threaded hole to house a bolt. I'll try and take an actual picture. Quote

The image I posted by the way was from the Ford Technical Information System (TIS) Under Workshop Manual > Galaxy 2000.75 > Engine 2.3L > disassembly > Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield. Quote
gizmo.john Posted May 13, 2010 Report Posted May 13, 2010 on the heat shield there should be 3 holes,2 on top and one at the bottom the bolt that you need is the same as the small one on the top i think it is 6mm mine was also rattling so i toke the top bolt out and put it in the bottom and it stopped it Quote
Steve T Posted May 13, 2010 Author Report Posted May 13, 2010 Tried that earlier. Blooming bolt sheared off. :16:. Quote
Willie Krashitt Posted May 14, 2010 Report Posted May 14, 2010 Ok, as I said, there is no reference on e-cat, but if it is the same as the top bolts, these are M6 x 10. If you want to get the second top bolt out, without shearing it, try removing it while the engine/manifold are hot. Not a guarantee for success, but it usually works. Good luck with drilling/tapping out the broken bolt. Put the new bolts in with a good coat of "Neverseez", like you would have on the spark plugs, and you should be able to get them out again if ever you need to. George. Quote
