rustychain Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 Hi there My glow plug light started flashing on the dashboard yesterday. When I got home I tested the brake lights after checking here on the forum - no lights! I've stripped the brake light switch this evening and found a bad contact in the switch. After cleaning it up and managing to put it back together in the right order, the brake lights now work - yeah! The only issue is that the glow plug light is still flashing! Do I need to reset the ECU (disconnect the battery?) or is there another problem I need to be looking for? Thanks Sean Quote
gregers Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 iirc when mine went it was just a case(yeah right)of changing the switch and everything was working again,i could be wrong but you could try disconnecting the battery,MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RADIO CODE.and see if this works?if not then maybe the switch is fubared and a new 1 is needed.vw was the cheapest i found about 8=9 quid. big_kev Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 Do I need to reset the ECU (disconnect the battery?) or is there another problem I need to be looking for? Assuming the vehicle has been for a drive after cleaning the switch....there is still a problem. The brake switch could still be faulty....it has 2 sets of contacts....1 for the brake lights and 1 for the Control Unit. There is no need to disconnect the battery to reset the ECU......EVER !....it is reset when you turn the ignition off. Quote
rustychain Posted May 11, 2010 Author Report Posted May 11, 2010 Thanks for the responses. I've decided to get a new switch as the current one was looking old and worn out (it was only a temporary fix). I'll see if that sorts the problems! Cheers Sean Quote
rustychain Posted May 12, 2010 Author Report Posted May 12, 2010 Touch wood, the new brake switch has sorted the problem! :16: I can't believe how much trim I had to remove to get in their, but it made the job much easier! I also had to trim a small amount off the switch lugs so I could turn the switch into position (in case you find yourself in a similar position). Cheers Sean Quote
