I bought a 51 plate ford galaxy only 3 weeks ago and has been in garage ever since with no joy, Water bottle that holds coolent on max when car cold but when going for short drive i check it and no coolent in bottle, car drives fine only thing is heaters blow out cold air when doing 60mph for about 20 mins, we have replced thermostat, radiator and cambelt and new water pump only fitted 6 months ago, also noleaks in system and head gaskette been ckecked and all is fine. Hope someone can help?

I had this on a 02 plate Galaxy.

It turned out it was the ELECTRICAL water pump - also known as the run on pump.

These usually last to about 100k - mine was at 89k. It can give a clue that it is about to go by a harsh wirr AFTER you have turned off the ignition. If you can hear a soft whirr after switch off then it may be running normally.

If it isn't working then there are localised areas of overheating within the engine block. The steam escapes by the expansion bottle, and it looks as if you have a slow leak

 

There is a good how to on replacing this pump elsewhere on the site. Part was about £100 from VW. Or £150 from Frauds - guess which I bought? Replacement completely fixed the problem
