lovie999 Posted April 25, 2010 Report Posted April 25, 2010 I was on the motorway this morning at about 80mph in my 2000 (v reg) Galaxy 1.9tdi and I noticed a whirring/hissing sound. This went on for a short while and faded as the revs dropped and then picked up again as the revs increased. I slowed down a bit and then was unable to pick speed up again (general lack of power) and then noticed black / blue smoke from the exhaust. Luckily I was able to pull into services - by then the engine was getting rattly and when I stopped I could not turn the engine off and it maxed out on the revs and I had to stall it to stop it. A passing tow truck guy looked at it and reconed it was a head gasket (the remaining oil is clean and no water loss) the AA man said blown turbo (he looked into a big pipe on the RHS of the rocker cover and saw oil?). Anyone got any more ideas and is it worth me trying to fix? Could it be terminal for my Galaxy? Quote

Max rev's normally indicates the engine is running on oil instead of fuel and 90% of the time thats from the intake system which is indeed from the turbo having failed. From under the car remove one of the pipes going into the intercooler - if there is a large amount of oil in there then almost certainly the seals have failed on the turbo. The AA chap has removed the upper pipe from the intercooler which will normally have a small amount of oil in it from vapour, the bulk will be sat down at the bottom of the intercooler which is why you need to remove the lower pipe to be sure. Blown turbo's not the end of the world as its reasonbly easy to change on the galaxy, its just the cost that might be the problem. Quote

Yes blown turbo is not the end of the world but easy to change? NO NO NO. I have just taken to the turbo off my 115 tdi pd sharan and its the hardest job I have ever encountered working on this car. And I thought pulling the intake manifold off about a month ago was hard. To make matters worse, one of the studs that mounts the downpipe of the exhaust onto the turbo borke off. Took 1 day to remove, 1 day at machine shop to fix broken stud, and 1 day to refit. If you are lucky, labour costs alone would be at least Quote
tim-spam Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 Having also done the same job on my Alhambra, I have to say that it is not at all difficult, but you will need a decent set of sockets - 3/8" and 1/4" drive with both long and short sockets. If you have the right tools, you can get a socket and ratchet bar onto all of the turbo to head nuts, which makes removal pretty quick. You will almost certainly need a new oil feed pipe, as this almost invariably shears off when removing it. I did mine from underneath, which minimises the number of parts you have to remove. Quote
lovie999 Posted April 27, 2010 Author Report Posted April 27, 2010 Thanks for your comments everyone - I am a little encouraged by them and will have a crack at removing the turbo today. Anyone got any thoughs on how much engine damage I may have done? It will be heart ache if I do the turbo and the engine is dead. Also will I need to clean out all the oil from the air intakes and exhaust or can I just burn it off if I get it running again? Quote
lovie999 Posted April 28, 2010 Author Report Posted April 28, 2010 OK Turbo out and intercooler and air intake pipes cleaned out (must have been about a litre of oil in there). Took about 4 hours Haynes Manual in hand. On the plus side there was still just enough oil in the sump to read on the dip stick. :) Just waiting for the new turbo to come in now having been let down by supplier who promised it for this morning. ;) Fingers crossed for part coming tomorrow and a successful start up about luchtime. Mirez Posted April 28, 2010 Report Posted April 28, 2010 A good days work, congratulations! Fingers crossed for you, the td is a solid old lump though and it takes a lot to kill one so I'd be suprised if its dead :) Quote
lovie999 Posted April 30, 2010 Author Report Posted April 30, 2010 We have a winner!!!! Thanks for all the comments - it's been a good few years since I got my hands propper dirty on a motor and it's paid off. The replacement turbo arrived at about 10.30 yesterday and by 3 p.m. the car was back on the run! Anyone else who finds themselves in the same situation should give it a go. Turbo was Quote
