My galaxy 1.9tdi AFN engine 1998 200K miles has been sufferring from hot start problems for a few months. when cold it starts instantly but when hot it takes several seconds to start. Vagcom reveals no fault codes. The engines runs great. Just made a 1000 mile trip to Scotland.

Any help would be appreciated

join the club, it seems to be a "live with it " problem that doesnt cause any real problems other than a few curses !

weve had it years, always fires up in the end.

nothing ever shows on vag com. someone mentioned a non return valave for the fuel, i have posted a question to find out if there is one fitted to this engine, only seems to be the AFN code thats affected

dunno if its been mentioned but just a thought, could this be crud in the fuel tank trying to be sucked through then going back to the tank??????. Edited by gregers

Mine is a 99 T plate - its just the same and is bloody annoying. I am of the opinion it isn't fuel dropping back as its worst when i knock the engine off for a minute or 2, if its left for a few hours it goes great. I have noticed a split air intake pipe which I am going to seal up but i'm not overly confident of a cure!! The suggestions of a low cranking speed from a hot starter motor mentioned in various threads sounds the most likely cure for the problem to me. But until the day it packs in totally it can turn as long as it likes!!!!!!!!!!!!

the next time it wont start try undoing the filler cap if the tank breather pipe is blockrd it will cause a vacume.the fuel pump wont have enough suck until air has seeped back into tank hence eventualy starting
