Mine worked fine on vista. Plugged the cable in first time in the house and made sure the software found the adaptor. The only thing i needed to change was the baud rate(4800) and com port (to com1 or com2) on the usb-serial interface in device manager.

Hi Al

How did you know that you needed to change the baud rate? Was it just technical expertise or other sorts of indicators/ error messages?

It didnt work, so when serial comms dont work you try it at a different speed, going lower first.

I think it should work fine at 9600 but on mine it didnt.

hi al.

tried mine today and didnt get much success. got as far as the laptop working with the software, and when going into the test button on vag-com i saw the message 'port status ok, interface found' but then upon trying to communicate with the car the only message i continually got was 'no response from controller'. after getting this for just over an hour i gave up. i did try baud rates of 9600, 4800 and 38400 but same result. any ideas of anything else i can try please, i would really like to get this working!! thanks again in advance of any advice you can give. richard.

Are you sure that you have the right port allocated.

Go into Device Manager and check which port your usb/serial adapter is using.

Most likely it will be using port 5 or higher ( dependant upon the mood vista is in, it could be anything ).

If so change this port number to 3 ( or anything 4 or below that windows doesn't object to ).

Then use this port in vagcom and all should be fine.

had problems getting mine running on vista today as it happens so try this mine worked after i did

right click vag icon then click -> properties ->Compatability -> tick "run this program in xp compatability mode for service pack 2" then tick run this program as an administrator on privilege level

then click ->properties -> security tab select EVERYONE 'if exists' give full control and modify permissions

thanks cyborg - i have just looked at the program properties and the compatibility level was already checked, however the user permissions were missing in the 'full control' fields so have amended that and will try it again tomorrow!

many thanks for the tip - hope it will work now!

hi big kev. thanks for that. i was on com 3 after modifying it from 5, and tried different baud rates too with no joy. following a suggestion from another member about program permissions and driver used i will make some more adjustments and have another go tomorrow! will post results. thanks again.

Also make sure the plug is onto the car nice and tight. Mine was a bit stiff to put on the first time.

And dont forget to turn on the ignition.

i have given up with it!! trying for 2 hours yesterday but still no communication with the car. i am sure there is something silly which is not set correctly but whatever it is its not happening. i have used the kit once before successfully on another 1999 galaxy about 18 months ago bu that was on an xp laptop. i have uninstalled everything now with a view to starting from scratch when i have regained some patience!

You running the correct drivers , if its an ftdi chipset ( 99% of them are ) then try downloading the correct Virtual Com. Port ones from the manufacturer.

http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

Also make sure that you install vagcom in admin mode and ideally to its own directory on the C: drive.

Do not install it into the Program Files folder as Vista is paranoid about programs running in this and will prevent them from making any changes.

Again run the program in admin mode....winxp or win98 compatibility shouldn't be necessary but won't do any harm.

As mentioned before check the Com port number assigned by windows.

Failing this try using Vagcom 3.11 as it is more stable than 4.09.

( Mk1 owners may have problems accessing 09 Central Electronics using this. )

kev think your goner have to talk me through this RATHER SLOWLY  in its own directory????

now how the hell do you do that?????

Posted

When you install the program it should suggest a directory usually C:\program Files\VAG-COM......

Simply change this to C:\VAG-COM

p.s hope you don't mind me calling you simply

ah ha.....

so if im looking at this right ;)

if i uninstall the program.reinstall it and follow your instructions it might work????

or am i going to have to reformat my hard drive to make sure all traces of vag are removed????

regards simply's

Before you format drive try creating another User Admin Account

you can do this by typing user accounts in the start search box then click Manage another account

By doing this its almost same as clean install

or download use ccleaner to fix registry problem caused by Vag installation.
