boffa Posted April 13, 2010 Report Posted April 13, 2010 I have bought a lead from Ebay to connect my XP laptop to my Mk2 1.9 TDI 51 Galaxy. When I initially opened the vag com with the ignition switched on, the laptop could not see the lead. I changed from com1 to com3 in the options panel of the vag com and it found the interface. Now when I try to scan, vag com can't find the ECU. It's version 409-1 and I searched the forum and found people changing settings in device manager, well I can't even find that......Doh!Any help guys Quote

boffa Posted April 13, 2010 Author Report Posted April 13, 2010 have you read this 1???http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...amp;#entry84798 MMmmmm, I,m not sure that's the problem, The port seems ok, but just can't connect with the car. I went into device manager (At least I know where that is now!) and tried changing the port number, but it kept giving me a message saying the port is being used by another application, and changing it could cause other problems. Whats with the BAUD thing?? I left the laptop connected to the car for 2 hours and it was scrolling through various connections but still couldn't connect.Anyone got any other ideas? Quote
gregers Posted April 13, 2010 Report Posted April 13, 2010 have you tried turning the ignition on? Quote
boffa Posted April 13, 2010 Author Report Posted April 13, 2010 have you tried turning the ignition on? Yes, even tried with the engine running Quote
gregers Posted April 13, 2010 Report Posted April 13, 2010 clutching at straws. have you plugged the lead into the port of car, turned engine on,turn comp on then plug lead into comp?does xp pick it up? Quote
Jayton Posted April 13, 2010 Report Posted April 13, 2010 Is there an indication light on the lead? (mine has a blue LED) Does it light up when plugged into the car? Set the cable's port to 3, reboot WITH the cable plugged in and remove all other USB leads you may have (mouse/3G/network stick etc ) and hopefully it will rearrange the other devices that were using that port to use another port. Then connect the cable to car, start the car, start vag com and do the test on port 3. Quote
alanrob Posted April 14, 2010 Report Posted April 14, 2010 A com port is a serial port. In the old days of PCs, before windows, you computer could only see 2 com ports, COM1 and COM2. Then the messed about a bit and let you use 4, yep COM3 and COM4. Some software really didnt like using COM3 and COM4 because they shared some bits of COM1 and COM2 Then windows came along and eventually added support for as many com ports as you could shake a stick at, in theory. Some software still isnt very happy with anything that is not COM1-4 or even COM1-2. Whats this got to do with VAG COM? Well a VAG COM lead is a serial device. One that needs a com port. So as most PC's dont have com(serial) ports any more they have built in a USB-Serial adaptor. So windows pretends the is a com port on you laptop that the VAG COM software can use to talk the the VAG COM lead. This com port is probably something like COM15 or so. So the VAG COM software gets a bit messed up. It can nearly find it. On mine it thought it found the lead but it couldnt find the car. Change the usb serial adaptor to COM1, 2 or 3 in device manager and the software should work fine. The BAUD rate is the speed that the data is sent down the port. Both ends need to be at the same speed. Usually 9600 is the most common. Often systems will try to detect the correct speed. Slower speeds are more reliable. On mine i needed to use 4800, again in device manager. Al Quote
boffa Posted April 16, 2010 Author Report Posted April 16, 2010 Ok Peeps, just spent another 2 hours mucking about with this to no avail. With the lead plugged into the car (The little blue led on the plug, lit) in options on vag com, when I set the port to port 3, a message says interface found. When I click on any of the modules, ie engine, a screen comes up with the details of the cars computer (I presume) which is blank, and then it starts scrolling through tests, starting with 1.1 to 1.7 then 1A- 1F having 4 attempts at each. Then it does 2.1 and on to 7.1, then up to 7F, you get the picture. It's as if the vag com is searching for the cars computer but can't find it. At the end of the search, it doesn't give any screen to say it's done it, just the screen that it gives you before you do the search, saying click here to start. All this takes nearly 2 hours, so i'm convinced I'm missing something. Help  Quote
