Guest wolfman62 Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 I had posted on previous links regarding the wiper problems, ie slowing, stopping and juddering.After taking the motor off and making enquieies into the costs of a new motor :D , I received an e-mail from a site member about the linkage.I removed the linkage and found that after disconnecting the ball joints I could not even move the splines with my hand and could only move them a little by smacking them with a hammer.I eventually removed the splines from the linkage and found the grease to be solid, so after a bit of cleaning and copper slip they now work like new.The message is dont assume that it is the motor or electrics if they stop working, especially looking at the cost to replace these parts. :D Quote

janrapacz Posted July 18, 2004 Report Posted July 18, 2004 wolfman62 - How easy was it to get the linkage out? I took the wipers off this weekend to see why they were stalling. One of the spigots heats up very quickly when the wipers are operated. Tried to drip oil and wd40 down the spigot but it still runs hot very quickly. I did not have enough time to try to remove the linkage. Do I need to take any other things off before I can get the wiper linkage out? Howe do I remove the spigot from it's housing? Your help is much appreciated. Quote

I found it quite easy to take the assembly off with the aid of a trusty Haynes manual. Getting the spindle out of the shaft is another matter. Big hammer was needed but make sure you put the nut back on before hitting the spline as it will damage the thread, I found out the hard way. Quote

Jimbo73 Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 common fault. I have had to get a new motor because it has definatley gone. But I am being advised that it will be the linkage that may of caused this. My car is a 2000 V reg ford galaxy the motor number is 0 390 241 441 With the motor removed it is possible to move the wipers by hand with a little effort, does this mean that the linkage is okay? I have read all the bits about the galaxy and spindles but I am not mechanically minded, so can you please advise what would be the best thing to do. Would it be best to take the linkage out and regrease it. If so what grease should i use, also exaclty were are the spindles, are these the bit at which the wiper arm connects to the linkage? I look forward to your replies and comments. This all started with my wipers stopping for about 20 seconds then they would go fine for a couple of minutes then stop again, then they stopped working totally. I tested the windings on the motor (I am an Electrician) and they had gone. Quote
NikpV Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 GEM will sense the current passed through the motor (similar to window motors) and cut it off for a couple of seconds if it gets too high (too much mechanical resistance->slower->less back emf->largert current-> threatens motor windings) so if it had got to the stage where the motor windings had burnt out I would regrease the entire linkage - probably with a boog standard lithium grease (no doubt a purist will immediately suggest a different type molybdenum maybe :unsure: :19: ) Quote

Liked the story mumof4.... I will be taking linkage out over the next day or 2, and will regrease the dam thing.... Still not sure about spindles and stuff, but I hope all will beocme clear once it is out. I will make sure they move easy. although the wipers do move now with a little effort should they move really easy once the motor is removed... Thanks God I found this forum... :o Quote
