marcr Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 Hi all, I jinxed myself by saying I hadn't spent out on the car for ages. My problem is the cable from the manual gear lever has popped off the top of the gearbox. I managed to check it out this afternoon and it's a dome-shaped connection, what I would call a ball joint connection. I can place it back together and get it working again but not for long. It doesn't seem to click over the ball securely like I'd expect. I guess it should have a clip and it's rusted away or something?? How can I fix it? Do I need a new cable (link or part numbers anyone please) or just a clip? What's involved? I've removed all the plastic trim in the cab and engine bay to expose the two ends. Am happy to put it in to the garage to be done if they can fit me in. Any ideas how much? Quote
gregers Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 do a searh on this m8 it has come up before and iirc there is a fix for it.might be the pinch bolt on the selector. Quote
marcr Posted March 28, 2010 Author Report Posted March 28, 2010 Am trying. Must not be using the right terminology coz it comes back blank each time. Looked in the faq. Am using my phone at the mo so might have missed something. Quote

Bigjeeze Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 (edited) Marcr The ball joint keeps on popping off due to wear you need to replace the cables. Some people have managed to repair it using tie wraps etc but that only leaves you wondering where and when it will next break down. Have a look here http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...amp;#entry35431 It is not a difficult job but it is tedious - You need to remove the front seats and carpets to get at the necessary bits. You also need to remove the exhaust heat shield. It takes about 4 hours to do - the parts are around Edited March 28, 2010 by Bigjeeze Quote
gregers Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 ahha bigj, thats was the 1 :) its the age thing -_- Quote
marcr Posted March 28, 2010 Author Report Posted March 28, 2010 Thank you both. Will get something sorted tomorrow - either the part or a local garage. I fancy doing it but am a bit up against it timewise. Am working till thursday then meant to be going away saturday.Always the way eh. Also i don't have ramps /access from underneath. Is this essential? For now, when i place it back on the ball it's only resting on top. Could i / do i need to give it a bit of a whack to get it to click back on more permanently? Have i been to soft with it? Quote
cm6478 Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 looks like a common fault this. I was on way out to get new battery for the car so i bump started it and by time i got to end off my road which is 250 yards i had no gears :( Will strip this down try cable ties if this don't work i think about scrapping the car Quote
bigtee Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 hi the spring bit comes off the end by closing it together and you can get the end bit that connects onto the gear box end it happened me last week and i had to buy one ,it cost me Quote
