Since getting the car the cruise control has not worked, I don't know if it has anything to do changing the accelerator pedal (within the first WEEK of owning it!) to a newer revision pedal ? Would it need to be reprogrammed to the new pedal ?

Is the cruise control built into the ECU or is it a separate module?

How do I go about diagnosing the problem on a fly-by-wire system?

Cruise control on the Tdi is built into the ECU.

Could be various things....Brake/Clutch pedal switches are favourite.

However could be related to the Throttle switch if this has been changed with the pedal.

Easiest way to check is to use Vagcom or similar which should identify the problem.

Vag Com shows nawt wrong with CC (I've scanned all modules listed under the Sharan).

I swapped over the whole pedal unit, from the plug onwards, so that should include the throttle switch.

I've looked for pics of the brake and clutch pedal switches, are these built into the pedal like the throttle switch is.

I may swap the old pedal back in and take it over the bypass and see if I can use CC or not.

The brake and clutch switches are located above the pedals ( can easily be seen ).

You should be able to engage cruise control at any speed above approx. 20mph.

Switch Crusie control on and when at required speed press the set button....

Do I need to remove the lower dash to see them ?

I laid on my back in the foot well (and wet pavement) with a torch and couldn't see any electrical plugs :(

You can view live data of the CC system with vagcom.

This will test the brake and clutch switches, and all the controls on the stalk.

When I upgraded my Tdi to CC, the first stalk I got was faulty so had to get another.

I found this on Ross Tech's site:

Activating Cruise Control on a new ECU (DBW):

Factory fresh ECU's often come with cruise control de-activated.

[select]

[01 - Engine]

[Login - 11]

Enter 11463 to activate cruise control

[Do It!]

Is that what you mean?

Right well, finally got round to doing this.

I after entering 08 meas. blocks, and putting in 006 and clicking GO it gives me the below:

When I press the brake I get:

http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj183/jayton82/galaxy/braking-cruise.jpg

and when I press the accelerator I get a response and the values in "Cruise Control CL//BR/RE/AC/on/on" increase.

Now when I press the clutch... zip, zlitch, nudda...

So I'm right to assume it's the clutch switch that's gone, damaged or disconnected right?

It's been awhile, but I have had the switch for a few weeks or so and decided to try fit it....

I can't see where it should go. this is the switch I bought

and it looks like it can't fit anywhere:

Have I bought the wrong one or is it further up behind the dash?

if its anything like the brake switch, get yourself in the foot well JAM YOUR head between the pedals turn your whole body round and look up under the dash then call for HELP,here you will find the brake switch im sure the clutch switch is there somewhere?

ruddy bell, found the old switch... it was missing the plunger bit!

For those looking for the switch it is just above the courtesy light hidden away in the dark recesses. Before removing the old one, have a GOOD look, and then another GOOD look at where it fits in and how you take it out to make fitting the new one a lot easier. I didn't notice which way it was so struggled a bit.

But if you struggle with a few torches and get it in the right mounting hole (ohhhhh errrrr missus), you'll notice the knob (your dirty little boy/girl) on the back of the clutch pedal where the switch will align with, that's the right hole to aim for.

Thanks gregers ;)
