Guest jimmythegimp Posted April 17, 2004 Report Posted April 17, 2004 i have just bought a ford galaxy 2.3 ghia petrol manual (1998)with an lpg conversion(which loses me a seat in the back but at 40p a litre i cant complain) ive only had it a week but have noticed that the brake pedal hisses intermittently ,which at first i thought was gas escaping but its not ,anyone know what this is?also in the last two days i have noticed that the engine takes a while (maybe five seconds)to drop the revs when i stop, this happens whether i am using petrol or gas?? any help or ideas greatly appreciated. ;) Quote
Guest nimrod Posted April 17, 2004 Report Posted April 17, 2004 which loses me a seat in the back but at 40p a litre i cant complain How big is the tank? you do know that most tanks on Galaxy's are fitted under the floor in the place of the spare wheel allowing you to have all 7 seats in place the hissing could be loss of vacuum through the brake servo! do you have cruise control? because this is operated by a vacuum system with switches on both the clutch and brake peddle, these switches dump the vacuum when you push on the peddles which could be what your hearing? Guest emjay Posted April 17, 2004 Report Posted April 17, 2004 I'd like to join in with this one .......... Ive got the same problem and still have not got it resolved. Mine has Cruise Control but I don't know where the hissing is coming from - it's pretty difficult to troubleshoot under there !! Quote
Guest nimrod Posted April 17, 2004 Report Posted April 17, 2004 It could from either the brake or clutch switches, the throttle pedal servo or the brake servo? try disconnecting the vacuum pump hose from the pump and pump the pedals a couple of times to release the vacuum in the system and then take the car a spin and see if it still happens when you hit the brakes if its the brake servo it sounds like a bitch of a job to change Quote
Guest jimmythegimp Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 there is a tank under neath and another in the back .? :D holds 75 litres or more!!!(maybe why it was so cheap :D )anyways i dont have cruise control and the hissing seems to be coming from the stud thing behind the brake pedal, it can sometimes do it when stationarybut when moving it tends to happen after i have pushed the brakes and it can last up to a minute or until i touch the brakes lightly then it stops.it is very irritating though, tommorow i think i will have a tinker i have a day off work. thanks for the advice. ridway Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 There is a hiss associasted with the cruise control; usually when disengaged. I have had this since acquiring my Gal and have always assumed it to be the norm. I just think its the vacuum being released that holds the throttle open when the cruise system allows it to relax. If the hiss is continual while the cruise control is engaged then there is perhaps a small leak in the contolling servo or associated pipe work. I would think that if the cruise system works correctly then this may be of little concern. I would be more concerned with the revs dropping late however because this could be associated with a vacuum leak. Does the cruise use the manifold vacuum on the petrol version or does it have its own electric vac pump? I assume the diesel must have one. This is one of those problems that could be dead cheap to fix or really expensive ie a perished pipe or loose joint or a new servo!. Certainly worth investigating. Rich Quote
ridway Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 jimmythegimp Just re read your last and realised you don't have cruise. I would therefore be more concerned as it sounds as though the problem is with the brake servo. The wandering pressure in the vacuum system is more than likely affecting the parameters used by the engine management system which could be why your revs dont stabalise quickly. Rich Quote
Guest nimrod Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 Does the cruise use the manifold vacuum on the petrol version or does it have its own electric vac pump? I assume the diesel must have one. The cruise control system on MK1 petrol 2.0, 2.3, 2.8 ltr models is powered by a vacuum pump situated behind the front passenger side indicator, on MK2'S I believe the pump is located somewhere behind the grill? cruise control on all TDI's and MK2 2.8's is controlled by the PCM and all the switches on the pedals are electrical switches only Quote
jvernon Posted April 18, 2004 Report Posted April 18, 2004 I used to have a Clio and if you just put your brake full on the brake pedal creeps to the floor after a while. I think that indicates a brake master clinder fault or something :D Quote
Guest jimmythegimp Posted April 19, 2004 Report Posted April 19, 2004 thanks for the quick replies.i popped into the local ford dealer this morning and the mechanic said i need a new servo so i went home and fiddled with a few pipes etc and prodded the valve on the back of the brake pedal and the hissing has stopped :D :D only problem now is that the car refuses to run on lpg :D petrol runs fine no hiossingswitch to lpg and as soon as i stop revving the revs drop and it stalls so i think i may have to consult an lpg garage :( :( may still be the servo it just doesnt hiss nemore Quote
