Hi

My Mk2 galaxy interior door handles ar starting to look a bit shabby - others I looked at seem to have the same problem - the thin platsic film wears off the grey metal insert. Anyone got an idea to tidy this up (Chrome metal insert would be nice)

This has been covered many times before. There is a known problem with interior door handles, starting with the first of the facelifted models and by some accounts, only just sorted. It is to do with the base plastic material not taking the "soft-feel" layer very well. You may get yours changed under warranty if the trim is peeling. If not, try a search on the forum. There is at leat one source of aluminium finished items that can be bought and fitted as replacements.

Ah thanks.

Also a builder friend came to the rescue - he had some aluminium tape (available in various widths) which makes quite a nice 'brushed aluminium effect'. The inserts just unclip and the old paint just scrapes off with your fingernail - carefully wrap the tape round to avoid stretching it and getting wrinkles - voila.

Looking at the photo above made me wonder why they ever put the front central locking button there when the silver door handle adjacent performs exactly the same function. (well it appears to on mine)

The whole thing just chips off - you can see it on the photo, it's really awful, the only consolation is that it happens on Audis, VWs and Seats as well.

BTW a good option could be to buy a replacement from the Skoda Octavia (only a textured hard plastic) and replace the grotty Ford ones with this one. I might give it a go now that I know it's an easy job.
