I recently bought a May 2009 Galaxy 2.2 TDCI Ghia with 15000 miles on it. I had covered around 120 miles with no problems.

Today I went for a 5 mile drive and when I was parking I could smell a 'hot fumes' type smell. Switched off the engine and popped open the bonnet. The fan continued to operate for a full 10 minutes after switching the engine off and the smell (with a litttle smoke that seemed to be coming from the front of the engine compartment) gradually subsided. The temperature gauge showed normal throughout the journey. After the fan stopped I waited 5 minutes and then turned the ignition on - the display showed 'engine malfunction'. I waited another 5 minutes and turned the ignition on again - this time there was no warning message.

I am scared of driving the car again until I have some idea of what caused this. I intend to contact the Ford dealer tomorrow and wondered if anyone else had experienced similar problems?

Its normal ! i have had a 58 2.2 tdci from new for 30 months and 40,000 miles.

What you describe is the engine burning off all the soot - AKA Deisel particulate recycling. In my 2.2 58 plate it stinks and the smell is like that from oil leaking onto a hot manifold. The smoke can be so noticable that it has had pedestrians poiting at the smoke coming from under the bonnet. With my 2.2 it happens daily at some point sometines more than once, usually having stopped after a couple of miles run - especially if you've aksed it to press on a bit.

The fans come on to dissapate the heat generated I have heard the some cars which didnt have the fans activate used to melt tarmac - note that the instant fuel consumption will increase from about 0.1 gal per hour to around 0.4 gal per hour during the cycle.

The engine malfunction light used to be a regular occurance after the recycle process but was resolved by a engine software update some time ago.

The 2.2 is great when it is going well - unfortunately for me that hasn't been all the time and I have had many problems with the ECU, turbo hose splits and worst of all the air con.
