Hi all

I bought my 51 reg Galaxy just over a week ago and when we picked it up the radio was on and was showing the local radio station, no problem. We have since played CDs and my hubby has tuned it in to MW to listen to the sport! and now I can't get anything from FM. Is it me or has something gone wrong? I hope it's just me!

You should check the aerial connection to the rear - same happened to me and I thought the worst, however, turned out that the aerial connection had come adrift on bumpy roads.

You will probably need to chop up a coat hanger to remove it, else buy a set of those removal tools from ebay for a few spondoolies - think I paid about

Seen that a couple of times, I've also seen it come detached from the rear window. the drivers side rear quater window has the aerial incorporated into it - if you look above it you'll see a plastic cover which is where the aerial wiring sits - it can become detached at this point as well.

Also common fault, tuners pack up, mine has just gone for the second time!

My Mk2 Galaxy (02 reg) has the 6000 unit, and the FM seems to lose the signal after 10-30 minutes. The aerial is connected OK. AM and CD use is fine. Could this be some kind of power issue with the aerial situated in the back qtr glass ? Does anyone know where this power unit is located ?

Following the FM losing it's signal (sometimes it comes back for a minute or two), the AM has also packed up, again sometimes working for a short while.

The aerial being located in the o/s rear window, and connected OK.

My understanding is that the issue could be the radio unit itself, but more likely the ground/earth, or an amplifier. Does anyone know where to look for these ?

Easiest thing to do to rule the radio to be the cause is to swap the aerial - a cheap one will do for this, you don't have to install it fully, just plug it into the rear of the stereo and stick it as high as you can inside the car. If it works on that it must be an issue with the aerial of some description, if not its probabbly the stereo itself.

I've had to resolder the middle pin connection on a van for someone I know (terrible vehicle that should never of been brought in the first place, almost nothing worked on it and it failed the MOT on 12 items AFTER he'd replaced the front brakes which were downright dangerous) - the pin was there, but when you looked at the wire it was almost like it had been cut by something, We had initially thought the poor reception was down to the missing aerial, but this was replaced with no improvement! 5 minutes playing with the soldering iron managed to get the two joined back together and its been fine since.

BrianH, thanks for your advice. I'm pretty much convinced that the issue is the aerial, but as it wiring goes all through the headlining it may be a bit difficult to get to Do you know if there's an amplifier/booster, and where it'd be located ?

No idea if there is, though I'd have thought not. Theres two long tracks on the rear window at a fair height, so wouldn't expect a booster to be required.

If you can get access to both ends you may be able to do some testing with the continuity settings.

If you can prove it to be the aerial (easiest way suggested before - a spare cheap aerial should suffice for this) then I'd start there. otherwise you could be chasing a fault from the wrong place to start.

I don't know what route the cable takes, but its got to get to the back of the car somehow, I'd guess its going up one of the A pillars and along the roofline - the logical route would be down the same side of the car as the aerial.

Booster to be most effective should be close to the aerial end of the cable run - before the signal is reduced by the cable itself. But I don't know if there is one.
