ian macnamara Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 rear tyres especially bad, they wear on the insides badly. Had them re-aligned at each refit but always advised that aligment fine. Is it a suspension issue, are the struts adjustable. regularly carry 6 kids.has anyone else experienced this issuethanksian Quote
andyd Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 You should be getting more than that. My galaxy (52 plate) front tyres wear on the outer edge (the shoulder) and according to my local tyre shop, they all do to an extent. I get about 14K out of the fronts but the rears last a lot more and they wear pretty evenly. I've tried cheepo tyres but they wearout quicker than a major brand and they seem to generate more road noise so I'm not sure that its worth it in the long run. good luck with getting it sorted Andy Quote
seatkid Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 (edited) If the alignment check (toe in/out) is correct (not a foregone conclusion unless youve checked at two garages) then its usually a camber issue - non adjustable on the rear AFAIK. Look at the back of the car from a distance and you should see if the rear tyres are vertical (correct) or leaning in at the top and out at the bottom. Check that the ride height is correct at the rear. If it is too low - caused by either soft springs/too much weight or by a previous owner lowering the suspension then the geometry change (camber) will mean that the inside edges wear out faster. Changing the springs may correct this. Also check the shock absorbers as worn out shockers lead to accelerated wear (usually uneven) as well being dangerous. Wallowing ride in the rear (can give kids car sickness) and hairy handling on S bends is the clue. Edited February 19, 2010 by seatkid Quote

The first were scrubbed on the outside edges at 8500. I had the tracking set up by the dealer and Ford did not want to know. I have just had the tracking done again as part of the dealers investigation into the tyre wear - but no explanation as to why the wear is happening again at about 8000 miles. Ford customer service offer no help other than take it to a second dealership. No one seems prepared to admit a problem or try to find what causes it. I tow a caravan but no mention has been made by of this.Jhets Quote
antzatgalaxy Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 I have a 55 Galaxy and was quite shocked to find the inside edge of the rear tyres VERY worn. It was practically impossible to see from any other angle other than the under side. If I hadn't been checking out the aux heater (many thanks to this site for sorting that one!), I honestly wouldn't have noticed with my usual check of the tyres (they looked great for the outside!). This means I got less than 10,000 miles out a set of REAR tyres! More annoying is that it is only the inner edge that has really worn, the other 70% of the tred is over 6mm. And it's not due to under inflation. I've had the tracking done now (or so they say!), but they can't adjust the Camber, which I think is responsible for this. Looking from behind the tyres both lean in at the top ( /--\ ). I've gleamed from a bit of web searching that this may be due to worn suspension parts, but I've also seen references to hydraulic rams !!! Is this type of wear normal, or where should I look first?
