installer69 Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 When I had the overheating problem I searched the web for a definative answer but there didn't seem to be one single cause so I thought I'd list my problem and what cured it in case the same symptoms are showing for you: First thing I noticed was the heating stopped being heating! Blowing cold air when there is snow outside was not good especially on a day trip with the family to Brugge. Then it got warm again. Bizarre thought I. Next, after about 50 or so miles it went to cold air again and the temp gauge started to creep over the half way mark where it usually sat. I found that slowing to 60 ish brought it back down again. We made it to Brugge without it going too high. It also made the journey back to the EuroTunnel without too much drama; just cold inside. It was on the drive home from the tunnel that the temp started to climb and would not drop. On this occasion it tripped the overheat buzzer and the red light came on. I stopped and waited then when I got bored enough I released the cap and stood back. Waited a long time (two papers and two coffees) then topped up with warm water from the petrol stations toilet. So to cut a long story short my tech checked the thermostat, flush out the system then said "let's stick a water pump on" so he did, and a cambelt kit while it was off. And low and behold the plastic impellor(?) had fallen off leading to no water circulation. On the pattern part thing there seemed to be 5 options which had varying impellor sizes; some plastic - others metal. So we ordered all 5 and measured the original to get the right one. All back together with no lasting problems. Then the Wife borrowed it and stuck petrolm in and drove it till it stopped! Some cars are just on a suicide mission... (by the way, we drained the fuel out, Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Water pump impeller is a known weakness. I had the water pump changed on mine when the cambelt was done about 18 months ago (and antifreeeze change at same time). It only added about Quote
