Well after the last 7 years of drivng Gal's the end is nigh

My current 2006 Mkll model has 74,000 on it, and although it has been pretty relaible over the last 2 years little niggles are now occuring, and i can see some hefty money needed to be spent during 2010

So, i've decided to trade her in for an SMax

Roll back, Roll back

After many discussions and changes of mind over the weekend, the decision has been made to stick with the Gal for the time being

So i will still be posting and asking questions on here and have not gone away

Look forward to continuing with the questions and banter

Cheers guys

Thanks guys, it feels good to be wanted :16:

The trouble is, i now know the following things are going to need sorting over the next 6 months or so

1. Over run on water pump - its making a buzzing noise when i turn off the engine , someone suggested bushes are worn

2. The dreaded "limp mode", where there is little or no acceleration - Turbo Vanes , vacuum pipe???

3. MOT in March - what will that hold???

4. A/Con - Topped up last May last year, OK then, but this year???????

Plus any one of Drive Shafts, Auto Gear box, Aux Heater, Glow plugs etc etc

Oh how happy i am to keep the Gal, i'm just off to listen to a Leonard Cohen record and really cheer myself up

dave if your hearing the buzzing noise then i would say its working ok,

open bonnet and find it at the back of the engine(tucked up)and give it a feel, you can feel it humming.if you cant hear it then its the brushes(or could be?)there is a fix for it in the faqs.

Give it time, like all cars they have their faults - its just still a little on the new side for them to be classed as "common" issues yet. :46:

I take your point but what about wiper spindle seizures? all car have wipers, only shalaxies need a relube every 4 years, I have always had fords and the galaxy has been the only car with so many issues and stopped on the side of the road. It has been fords worst car for reliability... as they didnt make it presumably.

Just to add to this topic, as many know, sold my Galaxy a couple of weeks ago after having it for a couple of years with only 1 fault (alternator pulley), it was a superb car but I just wanted a change. However, I do miss some elements of it on a daily basis, like the enormous load capacity with seats out and the high driving position, this has since been forgotten though since driving my 5 series BMW, it is in a totally different league, its high on miles but drives like its just come out of a showroom new.

It was inevitable that things were going to go wrong with the Galaxy eventually, but I can't help but still think that it was and will be be for a long time one of the best cars on the road today.

The Smax and the Galaxy Mk3 are the same car ?

Unless you are referring to the Smax and the MK1 & 2 galaxys...

In which case yes the Smax is very nice...however the olg Gals have reliable brakes.

Think Toyota....think ABS....Think Smax

Yes refering to old VW galaxys.

Why do you say smax brakes and toyota brakes are assosiated?... never had an issue with abs in any car. apart from a MK1 mondeo always coming out of the MOT bay with it on, and going off after a few miles!

Dodgy ABS systems......wasn't this a recall....below

The old MK1&2 Gals have the nice advantage of the ABS packing in on a regular basis and hence returning you to a safer braking system.....ie...press pedal...wheels stop.

Seems to be quite a few issues regarding recent ABS malfunctions resulting in lack of brakes....Toyota seems to have had the worst of it but it seems to be quite common.

Wonder how long it is before ABS is removed from vehicles.

Presumably, you meant "can't".

Well, here goes for starters:

1) Rear seats far better.

2) Load area much better with seats removed.

3) Car actually bigger on the inside and considerably smaller on the outside.

4) With the Eberspacher working (and mine, like most, always has - 8 years old and 120,000 miles), heating much quicker to warm up.

5) Better fuel economy.

6) Spare wheel.

7) Rear suspension sags much less when fully loaded.

8) Metal tailgate can be used for carrying bikes.

You also have to bear in mind that you're comparing new with old - any perceived advantages of the newer car have to be offset against the much higher running costs of a new car.

Rear seats are not better, at 6' 1" I had to crouch, suprisingly in an Smax i dont... it was the clincher over a new Galaxy

I take your point on the load area, but lifting Mk2 seats in and out was such pain 1 never went in it until sold.. they are Heavy !

Seems just as big on the inside, OK in the middle of 2 child seats anyway.

My aux heated was very tempremental and was pleased when it stopped trying.

Fuel economy is the same 2.0tdci = 130ps 1.9 (on 2 tankfulls measurment), and lower
