Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and would like some advice, I currently run a Vectra 3.2 gsi as my family car, However I now need a 7 seater as I have another child on the way.

I'm looking at spending around 5.5k on a 2.8 or 2.3 Ghia manual. Which is the more reliable car ? I would love the 2.8

for the extra performance but overall which is the better model.

Is the performance of the 200bhp 6 speed alot better than the 2.3 ford engine ?

Does the later 2.8 engine have a cambelt or chain

Any other faults to look out for ?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

The 2.3 engine also has a timing chain. I don't think it's any less reliable than the 2.8 but would obviously be much less powerful and responsive.

If the extra road tax, insurance and fuel costs are not a problem to you then the 2.8 might be preferable.

Whilst the 2.8 definitely has the extra grunt, it does use more fuel and the insurance costs are higher.

I find the 2.3 16V perfectly adequate in the Galaxy, with more than enough power for stress free overtaking. The timing chain also drives balancer shafts, making it a nice smooth engine for a four pot.

Personally, I'd take the 2.8 if I were going for a 'performance' petrol 7 seater.

Yes I think the 2.8 is for me, looking at the mpg compared to the 2.3, there is hardly any difference and the 6 speed when I go on holiday will be nice.

How much is the road tax a Year for an 03 2.8 Ghia Manual ?
