Does anyone know how/if i can reprogram a key with a PATS chip to start engine. I only have 1 key though.

Any ideas

Thanks

1.9TDI? Think you may need VagTacho and the correct VagTacho lead (correct me if I'm wrong).

one key means a mobile locksmith to make a second and then code both. others have got a second key cut and recoded at a shop.

here are the instructions i used in the past but with two keys.

Programming new keys for PATS immobilizer

This procedure only works if two or more programmed ignition keys are available and it is desired to program additional key(s).

Note:

If the programming procedure is not successful, the new key(s) will not start the vehicle and the anti-theft indicator will flash. If the programming procedure was not successful leave the ignition switch in the RUN position for at least 30 seconds, repeat the Key Programming procedure from step 1. If the failure repeats, refer to Diagnostic and testing to review DTCs and carry out Pinpoint Tests.

Note:

A maximum of eight ignition keys can be programmed to a passive anti-theft system (PATS) equipped vehicle.

Note:

If the steps are not carried out as outlined, the programming procedure will end.

Note:

Ignition keys must have the correct mechanical key cut for the vehicle and must be a PATS encoded key.

1. Insert the first programmed key into the ignition lock cylinder and turn the lock cylinder from the OFF position to the RUN position (maintain ignition lock cylinder in the RUN position for one second).

2. Turn ignition lock cylinder to the OFF position and remove the first key from the ignition lock cylinder.

3. Within five seconds of turning the ignition lock cylinder to the OFF position, insert the second programmed ignition key into the ignition lock cylinder and turn the ignition lock from the OFF position to the RUN position (maintain the ignition lock cylinder in the RUN position for one second).

4. Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the OFF position and remove the second key from the ignition lock cylinder, key programming mode is now active.

5. Within ten seconds of turning the ignition lock cylinder to the OFF position, insert the unprogrammed ignition key (new key) into the ignition lock cylinder and turn the ignition lock cylinder from the OFF position to the RUN position (maintain the ignition lock cylinder in the RUN position for less than five seconds).

6. Check the new programmed key starts the vehicle. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position for five seconds and then try to start the vehicle with the new programmed key.

7. To program additional key(s), repeat the applicable key programming procedure from step 1.

Just a note on this, there are VERY few places that can properly code a new key, 95% of mobile locksmiths and the like simply clone the existing keys transponder code. The result is that you have two keys that will start the car as the ECU just see's the old keys code for both - thats all ok but if you want to programme your own you can't as you need to unique keys to do so. The other disadvantage is that if you have a PATS fault and it stops accepting the key for whatever reason your second key will also no longer work. The huge pro is that its normally much cheaper to clone rather then to recode the PATS ECU.

When i got a new key programed in, the only place i found who could/would do it was fords.

Even then the first time they added the new key, that worked but the original would not start the car.

luckily i checked both keys in the carpark and went straight back in and they did it again.

I have since got another key but cannot program that myself. No mater how i try to do it, i cannot get it to work using the two keys in the ignition method, but i now only have it as a spare to unlock the car not to drive it as i will not pay another fortune to fords to program it for me.

Hi All

Just picked our 'new' Gal up (2003 2.3 Zetec, auto) and a few problems already! We received two keys with the car, a remote key and a plain bladed key. The remote will lock and unlock the car but will not start the car, the plain key will start the car. I am assuming that the remote key needs syncing with the PATS system, but as posted here I would need two synced keys? That being the case, what are we looking at to have Ford sort out either reprogramming the current remote key, or for me to source another remote and have new blade cut by a locksmith and then get Ford to reprogram the both of them?

Any suggestions, as ever, would be welcome.

In your case I would check if your remote key has transponder (chip) inside. To check you need to open key (separate blade part from remote control - use flat screwdriver to wedge between both bits) and look for small black rectangular piece of plastic (chip). If is missing, then this key won't start engine.

Hi George

Have opened the key up and found the chip missing. However I have an old key fob from our previous Gal (the remote part of it had failed but still kept the key), it's the same design key etc, would swapping over the chip work? I suppose I would still have the two keys issue to sync it with the car though?

Once the chip is paired with the car immo, can't be reprogrammed and you need new chip to be accepted by immo system. If you have just one key, you need to get chip programmed by local locksmith who would reprogram also car immo system to accept both chips (transponders).

as aid its either a trip to the stealers or a decent auto locksmith, who has the software to reprogram the keys.

or if as you say you have just bought it,was this from a dealer?if so take it back and tell them you want it sorted,

as they have given you 2 keys,im pretty certain under the sale of goods act, then they should be working correctley.

Hi Gregers

Yes it was from a dealer and the poor car has numerous problems, this is the most insignificant, but that is another thread! Needless to say it's going back to them.. Will keep you posted.

iirc under the sale of goods act you have 28 days to notify the dealer of ALL DEFECTS and iirc they are obligued to sort them out, dont be fobbed off with them saying this/that isnt covered under there warrenty.

this is the law,plz do a search on this before you go jumping in with your size 10s,fore armed is fore warned,

but a little bit of knowledge really annoys them:rolleyes:

I have 2 original keys which are both programmed to the PATS system. I have bought another key second hand and programmed it to operate the central locking.

I would like to get a replacement blade cut and then using my original keys, program the new one to start the car.

Can I re-program the transponder or are they programmable only once?

Thanks to anyone that can confirm this one way or the other.

The transponders unique, the ECU learns the transponders code not the other way around. With two unique keys you should be fine :)

Thanks Mirez for answering that for me. And so promptly too!

I'll get a blade cut and then I'll have 3 keys. I'll be ok

if my husband loses a key then . :)
