Starting Problems

Hi all,

This is my first post, so bare with me.

 

I have a 1999 (V) reg Galaxy 1.9Tdi

 

I am having problems with it starting.

 

I have all lights and the engine turns over but just doesnt want to fire.

 

I have had the problem before and had it put on a diagnotics machine which came up with KEY NOT RECOGNISED.

The mechanic reset it all and the spare key worked but the original didn't.

 

He has tried this again but the car refuses to start at all.

 

I have tried a new battery but to no avail. :D

 

I have looked on the forum and have read numerous posts about RELAY 30. Does this apply to the TDI?

 

Any ideas and help are greatly appreciated

You've probably lost the PATS chip in the key when you opened it to change the battery (it fell out).

 

PATS = Passive Anti Theft System = immobiliser

You've probably lost the PATS chip in the key when you opened it to change the battery (it fell out).

Sorry I'm a bit unclear about what you are saying.

What did the diagnostics say this time?

Did you change the key battery this time or the car battery?

Sorry mate. I'll give you complete story (sorry!) About three months ago i had this starting problem, the orignal key stopped working (starting the car) i tried the spare and it worked. about a month after the spare key stopped working so i took it to my mechanic and he put it on the machine and it came up with KEY NOT RECONISED, he said he cleared the codes and the car started but again with only the spare key. Now two months later the car won't start again. I took it to same mechanic and again the machine came back with KEY NOT RECONISED. Again he cleared the codes only this time the car wont start with any keys.

 

NOTE: the spare key is a normal flat key not a transponder key

Batteries were not changed in key. (but will check for this chip thing when i finish work)

Car battery was not changed but i did take it off to give full charge.

The immobiliser pickup coil (located near the ignition key) possibly has a faulty connection although that doesnt explain why it didnt work with one key but the other.

 

Can you check whether your remote key (the one with batteries) still has the PATS chip in it?

 

 

Maybe the sequence of events was

 

Intermittent pickup coil -> not starting

 

You changed key battery and lost PATS chip so key no good

 

Tried other key but pickup coil was now working

 

Intermittent pickup coil again -> not starting

Ive checked the PATS in the key and it IS missing :-((((

 

I will have a look at the coil in the morning but would like any idea if the key is just the start to an expensive fix

Is there a PATS chip still in your flat ordinary key.......no suspicious square hole in it ?

remove the chip and reinstall it in the remote key.

then have a serious thought about getting the spare key redone with a new pats chip and then reprogrammed,either by mobile locksmith or the stealers.

The original fault was caused by the PATS chip being lost from the remote key.

This flagged up a log message....key not recognised....

This message was harmless and just meant that a key with no PATS chip attempted to start the car.

The mechanic clearing this just removed the message from the log....it would have had no effect on the PATS system.

 

The spare key has a PATS chip which works fine.

The more recent log message....key not recognised....was most likely caused by someone trying to use the remote key ( I would have done the same ).....this could have been anytime between the mechanic clearing the original log and the present time.

Again the mechanic clearing this would just remove the message from the log.

 

 

The original missing chip PATS error could be steering you down the wrong road.

The car turn over and over but just doesnt fire at all. battery is fine. starter motor is fine. im at a loss at the minute. I will try seatkid's idea of the coil, but any ideas you have i will be very grateful

Go wiggle some relays :D

 

I would start with 167 bottom right ( possibly upper left middle ).
