the two fans on the rad dont come on untill the neddle is just entering the red then they both come on and pull the temp down i thought that one of the fans should come on first to stop the temp going anywhere near the red is this a job for VAG COM will that be able to tell me why its getting so hot before both fans cut in

cheers dave

AFAIK thats the correct operation, fan 1 only comes on independantly when the A/C is switched. They come on together to control the engine temperature but have 3 speeds in total so there is quite a bit of control. I doubt VagCom will tell you much about the problem but its very likely to be either a stuck thermostat or failed water pump with my money being on the former.

thanks for that can you explain why a stuck thermostat or failed water pump whould stop the fans coming on till the temp is in the red thought the fans worked on temp of water sorry for being so thick

They do, but they take the reading from a different sensor to the one that drives the clusters guage. If the fans are coming on full whack all of a sudden then its possible to have a controller or sensor issue but if they are just coming on speed 1 then its probably a discrepency between the two sensors. Without getting a reading using vagcom from both the gauge and ecu sensor you won't know.

:D And what engine/model year is this?

IIRC Multiple speeds controlled by multiple thermoswitches.

I had one of those and had to change both fans over time as they stopped working. It was a tight fit but DIY was possible. They do spin when you turn the aircon on. I recall a large resistor on the back or bottom on them. That could be corroded with salt spray.

HI ITS A 2.8V6 1997

In that case its the resistor pack thats burned out. Do a search for a bit more info.

And no...I dont know where it is....somewhaere at the front of the engine bay. Ask a dealer parts dept. and they will show you where it is on there parts catalogue diagrams.
