italiastar Posted April 9, 2004 Report Posted April 9, 2004 Does anyone know how to remove the speakers grilles on a Mk1 Alhambra - my neighbour has a broken one and I've suggested he gets one off eBay - someone is selling them for Quote
Guest nimrod Posted April 9, 2004 Report Posted April 9, 2004 Do a search on the topic ts been covered a few times, but I would sit there and pick the remaining bits off as it already broken, then use a hot melt glue gun and stick the new cover in place that way it saves pulling the door card off Quote
italiastar Posted April 9, 2004 Author Report Posted April 9, 2004 Thanks Nimrod - I've passed the details on - also looks like the eBay ones at Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted April 10, 2004 Report Posted April 10, 2004 The speaker grilles are not hot welded at the factory, it's just that replacing them in this way saves taking the door card off. There are increasing uses of torx screws on all cars to fit things, it appears that the manufacturers think that most of us do not have the relevant drivers to take things apart, so have to go to their dealers! However, I have heard stories that the sidelights on Mk4 Golfs with HID headlamps have to be changed by a dealer as it may require the front bumper to be removed! I do hope that this is a hoax. Quote
italiastar Posted April 10, 2004 Author Report Posted April 10, 2004 .....By the time they launch the MK 5, replacement of the headlmps will require removal of the front wings!!! - I think car design is going backwards. On the subject of Torx screws, during one of my trips to france I bought a small set of drivers which fitted 40 different "security screws" for Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted April 10, 2004 Report Posted April 10, 2004 Think I paid about a tenner for the same sort of box of security fixing things from the local hardware shop a few years back. I've also got a reasonable set of torx bits too. Quote

On the lardy ar##d MK5 there is more room behind the headlights to allow access to the lamp holders, it appears VW actually listened to owners/dealer techs complaints about the lack of access to the lamp holders B) MK5 Golf, still its a nice enough car but it will never be as good as a MK2 the one true Golf B) Quote
Guest Murdock Posted May 2, 2004 Report Posted May 2, 2004 I prefer the Mk1 Golf, I used to have a Soft top GTI and spent more time pushing it than driving it. Fuel filler rusts and eventuly blocks the filters and injectors. But back to the subject, do I have to break off any clips from my new grills before using the hot glue gun method. Or to save the problem happening again could I get some metal grills some where? By the way changing the headlight bulbs on the mk5 will actually involve removing the engine first :P Quote
Guest OXO2 PUB Posted May 3, 2004 Report Posted May 3, 2004 I'm replacing the speakers in MY04 Alhambra tomoz I'll have a look but I dont how relevant that will be to the pre face lift model Quote
