steve_r Posted January 4, 2010 Report Posted January 4, 2010 Hi I have a problem which sounds identical to the power steering pipe oscilation problem but that was in MK1? It seems to have come on with the cold weather. When not moving or moving slowly I hear a flapping / graunching sound from the front left when the wheel is above about 2/3 lock and when i move the wheel in both directions. No noise when driving normally - only when manoevering. My local garage took it away today and looked at it, checked everything was tight etc and found nowt wrong and when they brought it back there was no noise either so I can't blame them for not finding it. It's back again now though. Any ideas? Thanks Steve Quote

George106 Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 mmmm not the belt tensioner or alternator is it?under load these make a ratterling noise?? I am experiencing similar problems, whenever I turn steering wheel, I can hear that something is not right with steering system - clutch on the alternator is free in one direction and I can't hear this noise if not touching steering wheel. Engine under tray fitted, new drive shaft fitted recently, no leaks around steering system but maybe cam belt is due soon. What is the service interval for cam belt (1.9 TDi, 115ps, 04/2002)? SteveH61 Posted January 5, 2010 Report Posted January 5, 2010 I had what sounds like a similar problem, had the belt tensioner replaced, bit better, but still there, checked p/s fluid level which was fine. Eventually had the alternator pulley replaced, problem solved, apparently there is some sort of clutch within the pulley that was causing the problem.
