westytwo Posted December 18, 2009 Report Posted December 18, 2009 Hello All, Just bought a 1.9 tdi zetec Galaxy 1999, and on the home whilst braking the brake pedal went really hard and I started to wonder if I was going to have to use the stationary truck in front to stop!!!! I also have a severe lack of power and no pull after about 2000 rpm. Could the 2 problems be linked any advice would be appreciated, Ian Quote
big_kev Posted December 18, 2009 Report Posted December 18, 2009 Almost certainly loss of servo assistance on your brakes. Check that the vacuum pipe to the servo unit is not split ( or disconnected ). Listen for any hissing near the servo unit....it can leak as well. Not likely to be linked to the power loss, unless it happened at exactly the same time. Quote

Brakes sorted it was a split in the rigid plastic vacuum hose, what a difference a little servo assistance makes!!!! Just gotta sort out the lack of power now it just does not want to rev past 2200 rpm. I give it a run yesterday and had intermitent boost on and off any idea's. Had a passat 1.9 tdi with the same engine in I think. had exactly the same problem and turned out to be the turbo!!! However turbo's are not the cheapest thing to replace. I read on one of the forums that the turbo vain's can get stuck due to soot build up, can this be removed and is it a difficult job? Again any advice would be appreciated> Quote
dlivadas Posted December 21, 2009 Report Posted December 21, 2009 Most likely issue with the power problem could me the air mass flowmeter. I got me one on ebay for less than Quote
seatkid Posted December 21, 2009 Report Posted December 21, 2009 Remember the turbo is controlled by vacuum! So you may still have leaks in other pipes too! Out of interest, where was the split - was it at the brake servo end?. Quote

Out of interest, where was the split - was it at the brake servo end?. There was actually a split at both ends. One where it attaches to the servo and one the other end where connects to a centre piece where 2 small pipes come off. Do you know how many pipes control the turbo? is it only one and is it difficult to get to? Had a quick look and the turbo seems to be down the back of the engine, is it easier to get to from underneath? If there was a split in the pipe which controls the turbo wouldn't I still be getting a hard brake pedal? I have noticed that alot of people who have power loss seem to be able to turn the engine off and back on and the problem seems to clear, this is not the case on mine also I never have any engine managment lights showing on the dash. Read somewhere that something which controls the turbo vains could be stuck or the vains themselves could be stuck. So many questions so little time!! Once again any thoughts would be appreciated. Basically start at the turbo actuator and work your way back - there are joints galore. Could be sticky turbo actuator too... Quote

westytwo Posted January 17, 2010 Author Report Posted January 17, 2010 I have now replaced all the small bore hoses and still got intermittent boosting. I tried moveing the actuator arm and it does move but not very easy. It only moves about 3-4mm is this about right?? Quote
