I am experiencing sluggish starting on 1.9Tdi 110bhp Mk1 T plate. The duration of the glow plug light on dash is very short - even when ambient is -1 Edited by wjw

Its just cold and your battery is less than perfect.

My 1998 R reg starts instantly most of the time when the battery if fully charged.

if I have been running locally with the lights, heated screens, seats, fan etc all full on it can take a few seconds to start the next day.

The glowplug light only ever comes on for a second at the most.

Not true, BK!

The glowplug light comes on for only a second or so if ambient temperature is greater than about 6 deg C (gestimate) or the engine is at least luke warm. However below this the light stays on longer and longer. At -1 deg C and stone cold engine I reckon it would be on for about 4 - 5 secs. At -20 deg C it stays on at least 10 seconds. That is my experience anyway.

It appears to be controlled by combination of external air temp sensor, engine coolant sensor (this is a multiple sensor device) and ECU analysis of very recent engine activity.

Tks,

Have checked out various components and with the coolant temp guage disconnected glow plugs durration can be managed manually and engine starts on the button. ( 3
