Alternator Pulley

Hi,

I have recently had problems with the vibrations spoken about from the alternator pulley, i was wondering if anyone on here knows how to take the tension off the aux belt so the pulley can be removed, the process description/pictures or any info would be great, thanks

You take the tension off the belt with a lot of difficulty! If you look on the visable side of the tensioner you'll see a square hole - the official way is to use a special tool to locate in there and then lift up - if you dont have that tool then it can be done with a large allen key - when I did it I used a socket to wedge in underneath to keep the tension off but give it respect as it'll take your finger off if the socket slips out.

 

The actual process is very easy but the tension its under makes it difficult!

There is a square shaped lug on the tensioner, onto which you can put an adjustable spanner. Pull the lug to release the tension on the belt. You will then see that a small hole in the tensioner (near the lug) allows you to put a piece of welding rod through to keep the tension off the belt while you remove it.

I have a 1.9tdi galaxy Y plate whitch had the same problem, i changed 2 tensioners, 3 belts, 1 ford original and anti slip spray,

 

Also had the power steering pump overhalled all at great f;;;;;;; expense cos there was a wee bit movement in the pully, and still squeakin was still there.

Eventually the problem was this , at the end of the alternator pully there is a clutch which allows it to spin faster when the engine is slowing down, cost about

ps, forgot to say, i doubt it will be the tensioner, but when your in there change the alternator belt at least, and ask yourself the question does it need a timing belt? Also make a sketch of which way the belt runs before you take it off.

had the same problem on my wifes 02 galaxy tdi 115,put new belt on made no difference,a couple of weeks ago a customer came into the workshop with his passat tdi doing the same thing,spoke to vw, new alternator pulley, common problem keep them in stock even lent us the splined tool to do the job,got onto ford no tensioner available alternator at

Just to add my 2p's worth, in order to get the tension off the belt, another method is to place a 17"socket on the square edge of the tensioner at the top (see pics) and pull down on a breaker bar. If you look carefully at the design, you'll see the space the tensioner can safely move. This allows enough slack to remove the belt off the pulley.

This is how I changed my mates Seat Alhambra 130 alternator pulley. Will do my 03'Galaxy 115 on Saturday:

1. Disconnect battery

2. Remove airbox (allen key), plug on side, jubille type clip connecting pipe to airbox.

3. Take off plug from the back of alternator, remove black cap also in same location and take off nut holding another cable (13mm spanner).

4. Take off 2 x 13mm bolts for alternator, may need a gentle push to come off.

5. Take off pulley on alternator, special tool required (Sealey part number TC3307 Sealey SX400 )

I HAD TO TAKE MINE TO MATES WOKESHOP AS ITS VERY TIGHT!! Attach new pulley and tighten up.

6. Fit alternator back to car, and reconnect plug and wire.

7. Fit belt back to all pully's.

8. Apply tension using a 17"" socket attached to breaker bar, pulling towards yourself. This allows enough slack to push belton the wheel of the pulley and fit up on alternator correctly.

9. Refit airbox.

10. Reconnect battery

Job done!

I'll add decent pics shortly.

I know some people have managed to avoid taking off the alternator, but the pulley is very tight, so your call!

Had my alternator pulley changed today..all is quiet now..!!!!!!! ;)

so did i ,i had the clutch pully on the alternator changed by gb electrics liverpool,they done it in situ for 85 plus vat,would be cheaper if you took your alternator off your self,03 19tdi galaxy.

can anyone give details of where i can purchase the Alternator Pulley as i have to replace mine as it has siezed and no longer free wheels.

I have the Spine Tool, just cant seem to find someone that sells them at a price cheaper than replacing the Alternator itself......

 

Its for a 1998 SEAT ALHAMBRA 1.9TDI
