elkthing Posted November 28, 2009 Report Posted November 28, 2009 Hi, I have 2003 TDI and it will not start, the engine turns over and starts briefly and then stops. The car was working fine when parked, but upon return problem occured. The remote has been taking a few press of the buttons to activate the alarm, has been steadily getting worse. Batteries where replaced a week ago on the remote, and had been working up till now But remote problem had been returning, hope some one can help. Thanks Quote
seatkid Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 PATS (immobiliser) problem. Did the PATS chip fall out of the key when you changed the battery? Without the PATS chip in the key, the engine will start and stop about 2 secs later. Quote
kester Posted November 29, 2009 Report Posted November 29, 2009 sounds like mine. Could be immobilizer/remote problem, is the red light on drivers door flashing frantically after trying to start? get/check VAG COM error codes. COntact me if so and I'll let you know how I get on, getting auto electrician to look on Friday Also check spare key if you have one! Quote
elkthing Posted November 29, 2009 Author Report Posted November 29, 2009 Thanks for both your replys, have now fixed the problem. My wife had the car when the problem happened, after recovery service took car to local garage she remembered that the key had come apart in two!! It seems that the remote alarm was playing up again, so she unlocked the door manually. At this point the blade part of the key came away from the horse shoe part of the key. I took key apart again, and yes the pat chip was missing, so 11pm last night i was in a supermarket car park looking for a needle in a haystack. After 10 mins of looking in the dark with a torch, i some how found it ( still cant believe it now ). Put chip back in to remote key, and car started first time. Im now going to glue chip in key, also going to buy a second remote key. Quote

Your own fault for letting her use it.........hope you have learned your lesson ;) Quote

If no-one suggests any then try the Yellow Pages or yell.com for auto locksmiths, in regards to the pats chip, you cannot buy them on their own, it will have to be the complete key fob and key blade as the chip is normally situated at the blade end (see previous picture). But make sure the frequency matches your old one (embossed on the side). They normally pop up on ebay and also the blank key blade so you can have it cut and programmed for your car.
