cyborx Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 hya peeps,, fresh from the oven newbie here lol. i have been reading this forum for a couple of days now trying to get to the root of my problem, but there seems to be a few related issues that could be the answer :o my galaxy has been a good old girl till last week when i came out to the car and turned the key.key turned, starter turned then, hmmm. she turned ok for a couple ov revolutions then seemed to loose battery power as she stopped rotating.got a click on the key a couple of times so i rolled of the kerb and chucked it into gear, started within 10 yds (great)got home and guess what, tried key while engine hot and nothing. got the homestart man out who waved a badly welded screwdriver round the starter motor to short the starter :(owch. all to no avail, he tried the key one more time for good luck and wow!! cranked over veeery slowly and started.lasted a couple of days turning over so slowly you would think the battery was dead, and now its gone the same way again.battery is a1. is it poss that i have a relay problem or an idle starter motor, HELP plz :( Quote
seatkid Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 You say the battery is A1 but in my experience your symptoms are 90% indicative of either a flat battery or a duff battery. With the car running at around 1500 rpm, turn on all your lights, heated rear windscreen and heater blower - and check you have at least 14.1 volts at your battery terminal. If that is OK, then the alternator is fine. Check the battery voltage when the starter motor is being turned - if it dives (below 11 volts) and all your dash lights virtually go out during this time then its the battery or the leads. If the voltage/lights are OK then its the starter motor. Examine the heavy leads from the battery and from the starter motor, checking the crimps and the connections - particularly the ones that connect to the bodywork. IMO a faulty lead would give telltale smell/smoke when trying to start, so don't think this too likely. New battery doesnt mean good battery, you'd be surprised at the misuse and poor storage of batteries even at Halfords and what rubbish is sold at the bottom end of the market. If everything is fine with jump leads, then its the battery. Quote
cyborx Posted November 19, 2009 Author Report Posted November 19, 2009 (edited) seatkid, thanks for your post but as i stated, battery a1.have done all the tests (after bump starting car), alternator working ok too.jump starting with leads makes no difference what so ever.it is as if there is no current reaching the starter at all, all leads have been checked for corrosion and or breakages.my only issue is that when the starter decides to turn over it is very sluggish and quickly winds down as if the battery was flat.the only way to start the car when in this mood is to bump or tow, but she starts within 10 yds from cold.i have checked for fault codes but all seems ok there so before i go down the expensive 'electrical engineers' path i need to find out if there is a relay that will flag this problem when intermitently breaking down or is a replacement starter the way to go :) btw, like your sig -- --- .-. ... . / -.-. --- -.. . / .-. ..- .-.. --.. :) Edited November 19, 2009 by cyborx Quote
