suzuki91 Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 if you do buy one to replace it, fitting is a piece of cake so if you can spanner, do it your self and save the money. to repair this one you may be able to reloop the cable back onto the winder by winding it up and down a few times with a bit of tension on it at all times.the strip and repair otion is faily easy and you will see how easly they can go wrong if you wind one with no tension..... seatkid Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 This marvel of engineering (I jest) should be lowered at least once every 2 years and liberally doused in WD40, grease or similar and checked out, particularly the bit on the end that has a hinged part (usually seized up). Do not allow the wire to spin around and keep it in tension when winding up. If you've never had it down, then do it now as its not the kind of thing you want to sort out by the roadside. Quote
Big Stew Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 I just bought a new replacement off ebay, less than 10 mins to fit ( 2 X Bolts) .Don't waste your money at ford M8. Quote

That's the problem It is stick in the down position with about 2 feet of cable trailing behind like a tail and wont wind up. Meant to add in my naivety that i would have thought that the weight of the spare wheel being winched back up would have kept the cable in sufficient tension, also with the newer ones there are no metal retainers; its a plastic piece not metal like the earlier versions so no hinged part to grease Edited November 19, 2009 by bill n ben Quote
suzuki91 Posted November 20, 2009 Report Posted November 20, 2009 hang the spare back on the cabel and use its weight to tension the cabel. then try winding up and down with a bit of luck you may sort the snaged cabel. other wise remove the whole unit from the car and replace it or fix it. Quote
