lilbob Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 after reading the pinned thread on the aux heater am i right in saying the smell and smoke is normal?but on our 200 zetec TDI we are getting quite a bit of smoke (some one stopped the oh and told her the car was on fire)but if it is normal would changing the glow plug reduce the amount of smoke we are getting?we still have the jet turbine noise coming from under the car thanks all Quote
Rallim Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 (edited) No its not normal for it to produce smoke, it indicates the glow plug is failing and not hot enough causing incomplete combustion of the fuel. Eventually your booster heater will eventually stop working. Replacing the glow plug should resolve the smoke and all you will be left with is the 'batmobile' turbine noise and hopefully a nice warm car! Gordon. B) Edited November 13, 2009 by Rallim Quote

bj2004 Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 sounds like b to me it heats the coolant up quicker and increases the eficiency of the car gets cabin heat up quicker and sounds really cool how can that be unnecessary ? Quote
JRWR Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 I don't believe this is an unnecessary part of the car and it should work properly. However, on my 2004 TDi Galaxy it doesn't and VAG-COM indicates it has failed to ignite a number of times so it's stopped trying which suggests a replacement glow plug is due. I have access to the brilliant photos and full description on how to do this replacement but could anyone point me in the direction of where to get the glow plug? Are there different ones for different models? Should I buy from Ford/VW/Seat or is it available on eBay or anywhere else on-line? Thanks allJRWR Quote
gregers Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 they sometimes come up on ebay, but the concensus seems to be the best and probably the cheapest place is vw dealers. Quote

Do you really think the engineers at VW would put these in and keep putting them since the first model in 1996 to the latest in 2009 if they weren't necessary?. They help the engine to heat up quickly in the winter as well as providing heat in a large cabin. By all means pull the fuse temporarily until you get it fixed but you will need it fixing especially now winter is coming. Quote
Rallim Posted November 14, 2009 Report Posted November 14, 2009 they sometimes come up on ebay, but the concensus seems to be the best and probably the cheapest place is vw dealers. I had to change my glow plug for the second time (2 years after the first replacement - premature failure I believe due to the run-on pump brushes being worn out, causing the heater to turn off due to overheating after short time after it fired up in the morning), I tried the dealer in Stafford and they wanted Quote
lilbob Posted November 14, 2009 Author Report Posted November 14, 2009 cheers all does anybody know what the part number is for the glow plug?and which fuse is it for a quick fix till i get the glow plug sorted thanks again Quote
lilbob Posted November 14, 2009 Author Report Posted November 14, 2009 ok quick recap just been out in the car and its quite chilly had a nice jet sound coming from the rear passenger door but no smoke so its not doing it all the time Quote
Rallim Posted November 15, 2009 Report Posted November 15, 2009 ok quick recap just been out in the car and its quite chilly had a nice jet sound coming from the rear passenger door but no smoke so its not doing it all the time Yes that's what mine was like. When I first got the car the heater did not work, so I cleared the errors using vag-com and it started to work. Initially it seemed ok, but then it started smoking occasionally, my wife had a similar experience to yours with someone knocking on the window telling her that her car was on fire. It will probably eventually stop working altogether with errors. If it locks out you will need to have the errors cleared before it will work even after changing the glow plug. Ekta gives the part number as 7D0 963 219, the part number on the AVS website I put a link to states 7M0 963 319, which also shows the BERU part as GH001. Gordon. Quote
marinabrid Posted November 16, 2009 Report Posted November 16, 2009 beru gh001 is available from gsf car parts cheaper than the dealers this plug has one nut connector on top, some later models are fitted with a plug that has 2 wires embedded in it that you can only get from dealers. i think these were fitted 04 or 05 onwards on some heaters, Quote
