Arrrrgh! First Scratch On Me New Gal!

<_< Help! er indoors reversing off the drive last night has managed to scratch the left hand side of the rear bumper. One scratch 6 inches long I can feel it (just with my nail) but appears to be in the clearcoat and not deep into the paint. Car is only two weeks old sniff! sniff! Should I try and just wax it out first? or use a colour wax polish or t-cut then wax? Any advice gratefully received car is metallic metropolis blue (pale blue). :D

If its only a surface scratch try polishing it out, I would avoid tcut on a new car.

If you think its gone through the lacquer and not too deep into the paint then clean it up (use a solvent cleaner) then blow some lacquer over it ( mask it off first) or brush it on. When its dried after half a day, gently tcut it back to level it off, repolish and wax.

 

At least on the bumper it won't rust. <_<

are you sure the rear bumper's finished with paint and clearcoat, seatkid? as you hint, the bumper's made out of plastic. i always assumed it was fibreglass with a gelcoat finish? that's not to say your remedy wouldn't work, though.

I would leave it. A perfect car attracts scratches and dents with one small scratch you will ward off the evil dent monster.

good point, hjt, even if you are on the wrong medication. i've got a horrible gash on my rear bumper <_< but isn't that what it's for? i'm leaving it to collect a few more then i'll have them all fixed together and start again from, er, scratch.

Try the JML Scratch Remover.

 

I bought some, seems to work really well!!

like others I would leave it..... (maybe just have a go at polishing it if it were a new car)

 

Or put a matching one on the other side and call it customised :o

Mussey - what is the secret to using the JML scratch remover? I bought some to use on the wife's Scenic and it's useless. She's scratched all round the keyhole on the driver's door with her bunch of keys - don't know how or why, as it has remote locking! But so far I am unimpressed with the scratch remover. Plenty of grey primer showing through mid-blue topcoat. :o

You really need to use a bit of elbow grease when using the stuff,

I had to put on about 3 or 4 applications before I noticed a big difference.

 

Then a good polish afterwards.

 

It wont take out very deep scratches, but all I can say is that it has worked well when I have used it.

:lol: Sounds as if you've overdone it! Looks like a respray and plenty of lacquer required (maybe Renaults skimp a bit on the lacquer)

 

Also JML sounds like its another name for Tcut. The problem with tcut is once youve gone through the lacquer, the paint comes off like billio :lol:

 

:( Scratches around handles seem to be from peoples hands/fingernails etc. You always seem to get them no mater how careful you are :lol:

 

Plently of polish/wax seems to be the best protection.

This isn't primer showing through after treatment, it's primer showing through the scratches. Although the car has remote locking, I think the wife holds the bunch of keys in her hand when she pulls the door handle, and that's when they come into contact with the panel, scratching the paint. Will try to have another go over Easter, if I get the chance (dad is in hospital again, currently having his op..... must remember to fill up with fuel tonight in preparation for loads of trips to and from hospital over the coming week.)

No scratch remover in the world will remove those scratches! You have to refill them. If you are dextrous enough, try carefully brushing in paint, cut well back and then blow over with plenty of lacquer.

 

Alternatively maybe you can fit those Golf type protection plates if they do em for renaults...

I find it is the rings on the wife's finger that scratch the car near the door handles. Luckily the Galaxy is so tall, on normal cars the women in my family tend to put the handbag on the roof whilst they open the doors and put things in. They are aslo under the misconception that the glove pockets in the doors are litter bins.

 

Fortunatley is was only in her Fiesta but she bent the alloy front wheel so much that the air came out, but she drove the 10 miles home as it was raining. The tyre was smoking when she arrived.
