Hi,

I have a 96 N reg 2.0 petrol MkI Galaxy, which has been running very well.

Recently, it stalled when I was getting on to the Motorway, and had it towed home.

When I opened-up the engine, I noticed that the timing chain was loose.

The tensioner (non-metal part) was chipped, and the long guide rail was also broken.

This is the first time the engine was being opened, as the car has not given any major problems before.

I replaced the whole timing-chain set, including the oil-pump chain & tensioner.

Now I am struggling to get the timing back OK. I have followed the instructions in the Haynes service & repair manual, but when I start the car, it just idles for a few seconds, and then goes off; even the idling is not smooth, as it seems the timing goes off, as soon as the engine turns.

Any pointers as to where my problem might be, what else I need to check?
