Denis Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 Took my new Gal on her first motorway outing today, thought 3000rpm at 70 mph was a bit high? Though was pleased to average 28mpg for the entire journey including driving over Dartmoor. Wonder if the Continental fuel saver tyres have got something to do with that. Quote
Dally Posted April 5, 2004 Report Posted April 5, 2004 Denis 3000 rpm is about right for a V6 auto - I thinks that's too high personally and does impose on comfort. I am, however, envious of your 28 mpg average. On a long run at about constant 70 mph, the best I've got is about 26.5 mpg. Quote
Denis Posted April 5, 2004 Author Report Posted April 5, 2004 What kind of tyres you running Dally? Quote
Dally Posted April 5, 2004 Report Posted April 5, 2004 Denis I'm on Michelin Pilots! They're on the hader side of compounds and hence a bit harsh on the ride - Lets hope they last longer to compensate. Personally, I miss the Dunlop 2020E's on my old Galaxy - They gave good grip and were very supple. Don't know how long they would have lasted though. Quote
Denis Posted April 5, 2004 Author Report Posted April 5, 2004 Dally, I just checked on the Continental website and they claim a 5% improvement in MPG for their 'fuel saver' tyres. Incredibly, that accounts for the 1.5 mpg difference between our cars. Though it will be interesting to see how the Pilots wear compared to the Conti's, the cost of replacement has to be considered. As a keen racing cyclist, I have found that the faster a tyre is in terms of rolling resitance, the faster it wears out. By a lot! Quote
Dally Posted April 5, 2004 Report Posted April 5, 2004 Denis How do the conti's ride in terms of comfort? My V6 rides a little harsh and it transfers every little road irregularity into the cabin - resulting in what I would call a 'jittery' ride on most surfaces. It is, however, pretty smooth on some of the newer roads.Just wondering what role the tyres might be playing in this! Quote
Denis Posted April 5, 2004 Author Report Posted April 5, 2004 Hard to say really- I have switched from a '99 2.3 Zetec so the new car is totally different in many ways. I almost crashed my V6 when I took it for a test drive- the acceleration from rest is so fierce. Though I am already getting very fond of the roar of the engine! Quote
Dally Posted April 5, 2004 Report Posted April 5, 2004 You're right, it is a very different machine. My previous was a 2002 model 2.3 zetec. In some respects, the 2.3 was the easier and more comfortable car to drive or ride in.but the V6 rewards in other areas. I agree the engine is fierce but the autobox adds to this when it just lurches forward at times (especially when cold cos the mixtures richer and it's idling faster). The engine does sound great esp at about 4000rpm +!!
