drstraw Posted October 31, 2009 Report Posted October 31, 2009 Hello everyone. As there is no Haynes manual; for the facelifted Galaxy (post 2000; and I don't know of an alternative) could anyone tell me where in the engine bay the engine temperature sensor is please? I think mine is a bit dicky but I don't know what to test/look at to see if I'm right! I've had the coolant changed by a garage using some special kit from VW to remove any air-locks (my first thought) after a hose split and the radiator refused to warm up, so I think I've eliminated that potential problem, but my temp., gauge still wibbles about and them stays on 50oC. It drives well, not overheating and the radiator now gets warm (so it's cooling) but the gauge not working gives me the willies-alloy heads and warping plus the bill you get afterwards is scary. Any other information about potential cooling problems from you guys would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch.Andrew. (First post!)PS I have a 2000 X reg TDi PD 115 Galaxy and it's great otherwise. Could do with more GO but that's an aside!PPS Please don't get too technical: while I'm not an idiot I'm not someone who has his own laptop with VAGCOM on it lol. ;) Quote
Willie Krashitt Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 The ehgine temprerature sensor on the TDI is located round the back of the engine in the water outlet (and is just above the gearbox). Do a search, as someone posed a 'how to change it' with pictures.Make sure that you get the correct colour replacement or your gauge will read wrongly (among other things).George. Quote
drstraw Posted November 1, 2009 Author Report Posted November 1, 2009 Thanks George, you're a star! :angry2: Andrew Quote
Usual Posted December 9, 2009 Report Posted December 9, 2009 Hi, I've just bought a 56 plate 1.8tdci ghia and have a similar problem. The temperature gauge seems to take a long time to move but when it does it seems to be ok. My worry is if it's giving a false reading. I've left the engine running for 20mins and it didn't move even though the radiator fan kicked in. When driving it can take 10 to 15mins before it begins to move then seems ok. Quote

jimi Posted December 9, 2009 Report Posted December 9, 2009 Oppp's.....I've just bought a Galaxy ghia x (first one..!!), just noticed half way home the the temp gauge needle was still at the bottom of the white area and the dash bulb behind the gauge is also not working, the heater works great, so I guess the thermostat is working ok.!!, I've been searching these fourms for answers :) and it seems that I'm joining the temp sensor crew...?? I would luv to hear if anyone else has got these symtoms....and did they get it sorted...!!! Jimi Quote
Usual Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 Well nearly one week of ownership and I've got to admit I'm glad I got my Galaxy. Luck was with as I had a month on the FORD warranty so I had a problem with the alarm due to water ingress fixed, the child lock fixed and the temperature gauge checked which was my main concern. It turns out the temperature gauge is fine I'm surprised but hey. Quote
edatelder Posted December 14, 2009 Report Posted December 14, 2009 The diesel engine is very efficient and takes a long time to warm up. Quote
Saif Rehman Posted December 14, 2009 Report Posted December 14, 2009 I like many people have two cars in the family, the trusted Galaxy as a family car and an old L reg petrol Toyota Carina as a 60 mile round trip commuting car. The Galaxy can be driven up to a local bypass which is 4 miles away and still register cold with no heat from the vents, only after driving for aprox. 10 minutes will it reach normal operating temperature and only then can i turn on the front and rear heaters to give some heat.Whereas the Toyota will be nice and warm after only travelling 1 mile. So, as previously mentioned, the Galaxy's with diesel engines do take a while to warm up - as long as the car does not overheat and drives fine there is nothing to worry about in regards to the temperature gauge needle moving very slowly. Ginettamad Posted January 25, 2010 Report Posted January 25, 2010 It wont warm up at all in winter if your booster heater under the rear Pass Door floor is not starting up below 10 or 5 degrees? This is most likely reason cars are running too cold and above that temp still slow too as stated.H Quote
