Taliska Posted April 2, 2004 Report Posted April 2, 2004 Exhausts - replace them??? :( Old Audi 80 with 186,000 miles and 10 years old was still on her original exhaust (and clutch for that matter)! Now she was a diesel, as of course is my Gal, I wonder if the exhaust will ever need changing on this beastie? Ivor_E_Tower Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 Don't tempt fate, but diesel exhaust are less corrosive than petrols and the exhausts should last longer. On short journeys the big killer is the water left INSIDE the exhaust system which doesn't get heated/evaporated off the insides of the boxes and pipes, so the exhausts tend to fail from rusting inside to outside. My 1985 Honda petrol went 6 years on its original exhaust and another 5 years on the first replacement (both just mild steel). On the other hand, once we moved to current location and it only got used for short journeys, it failed every year. Luckily I bought lifetime replacement cover. Got about 6 replacement rear sections fitted at no cost! Quote
Taliska Posted April 3, 2004 Report Posted April 3, 2004 Ivor, you definitely got the right deal there!!! Taliska Quote

One of my parents neighbours used to remove the exhaust system off his Renault and pour the old engine oil into it! he would stand there and turn it over a few times to make sure it coated all of the internals, then stand it on end to drain out the excess oil, when he was sure it was all drained he would refit it and take it for a run :) he swore blind that the coating of oil inside the exhaust boxes helped to prolong their life! this was before the time of catalytic converters and the emission test was not part of the mot! so the burning oil fumes were of no great concern to him but only to the poor guy following him :) Quote
italiastar Posted April 4, 2004 Report Posted April 4, 2004 My 1986 Astra (yes I did like them once) still had the original exhaust and had only had the original battery changed the year before, when it was written off in 1996!!! - It was Petrol, not garaged and mostly used for short journies, apart from holidays. It's probably the best car I'll ever own!! Quote
Guest kevinmac Posted April 9, 2004 Report Posted April 9, 2004 I have a 2.8 VR6 Sharan and I just bought a rear box for Quote
fionnmacz Posted April 9, 2004 Author Report Posted April 9, 2004 yep trust me for having a 1.8t petrol........ 'no aftermarket companies do your exhaust as its not a common version' i was told, 5, no 6 times. have to buy from main dealer, and it looked like it too, until the kwik fit man came to the rescue! they tried hard and finally sourced them from another obscure company and retail at about Quote
Guest nimrod Posted April 9, 2004 Report Posted April 9, 2004 What year is your 18T? because eurocarparts have exhaust parts listed for the 18T Quote
